How to watch & unblock Sunderland AFC SAFSee in the UK

Sunderland AFC

If you’re looking for a way to watch all the matches on Sunderland AFC’s SAFSee service in the UK then this is the guide for you.

In this guide I’m going to show you how you can gain full access to SAFSee even if you’re in the UK. You won’t need to miss any of the games.

Sunderland AFC’s SAFSee service shows almost all of Sunderland’s matches live online. If you’re in the UK you can watch many of the games but the widest coverage is available to those overseas.

Like all UK TV services, they’re required by the EFL to block access to any games that kick-off between 2:45 and 5:15 pm. Below I’m going to show you how you can still access and watch them.

What you’ll need to watch

To watch all of Sunderland AFC’s matches this season you’ll need a subscription to the SAFSee service.

It’s the new online streaming platform for watching Sunderland AFC live. It’s similar to the larger service iFollow used by other clubs up and down the country.

When you visit the payment page in the UK you’ll see only options for the season and monthly “Audio Pass”.

International users will see an additional option “SAFSEE 20xx-xx Live Streaming Pass (INTERNATIONAL ONLY)” and individual game passes “xxxxx v Sunderland Live Stream – International“.

To access this in the UK you’ll need to get yourself a VPN service. A VPN app allows you to change your location and make it appear as if you’re in a different country.

When using a VPN from a provider such as ExpressVPN it makes the SAFSee website think you’re outside the UK and so lets you access the international live streaming pass.

Below I’ll show you the simple steps how to get a VPN and how to use it to sign up and watch SAFSee from within the UK.

How to use a VPN to watch SAFSee

There are hundreds of companies out there that offer VPN services. My favourite is ExpressVPN because they’ve got a huge 30-day money back guarantee and if you sign up for the whole season you can get 3-months free on their annual subscription.

However, if you want to shop around then below are my three recommendations of VPN service you should use for watching SAFSee in the UK:

  1. ExpressVPN – Recommended
  2. IPVanish
  3. NordVPN

All you need to do is choose one of the three above. Then follow the simple steps below. I’m using my recommended provider ExpressVPN in the example:

  1. Visit the ExpressVPN website and sign up for their service.
  2. Download their app for your device from the Products section of their website.
  3. Install the app and open it. Login when required.
  4. Select Selected Location (1) and then press Switzerland, Germany, France or any outside the UK (2).
  5. Wait for the app to connect or press Connect if it doesn’t automatically.

ExpressVPN app connecting to Switzerland

Once the app has connected head over to the Sunderland AFC SAFSee sign-up page.

You’ll now see a new option that you wouldn’t normally the “SAFSEE 20xx-xx Live Streaming Pass (INTERNATIONAL ONLY)”. Click “Buy Now“.

Follow through and complete the sign up process. That’s all there is to it.

When you’ve finished disconnect from the VPN service. To watch any games blocked in the UK such as the 3 pm games you’ll need to reconnect to the VPN app which I explain below.

How to watch UK Blocked ‘3 pm’ games

When you login to the SAFSee website from the UK you’ll only have access to watch the games permitted to be watched in the UK.

With the VPN service you signed up for, for example, ExpressVPN you can unblock all the matches and watch them all in the UK.

This includes any 3 pm games which in fact covers all matches kicking off between 2:45 pm and 5:15 pm. It will also allow you to watch any other matches that are being shown on the big UK networks such as Sky which are also blocked in the UK.

Simply connect to a country outside the UK on the VPN app, for example Switzerland, Germany or France and then revisit the SAFSee website or launch their app.

You’ll now be able to watch all the Sunderland AFC matches in the UK with your annual subscription.

A quick recap

Sunderland AFC’s SAFSee service is open to users across the world, including the UK.

However, the UK has a severely restricted service due to football league regulations that state that any matches kicking off between 2:45 pm and 5:15 pm can’t be shown live on TV or online.

Outside the UK it’s a different story. All matches can be shown.

By using an app called a VPN from my recommended provider ExpressVPN you can unblock all the blocked matches on Sunderland AFC’s SAFSee, this includes the traditionally blocked ‘3 pm games’.

Just grab yourself a VPN from ExpressVPN by clicking the button below and then visit the Sunderland AFC SAFSee sign-up page to get the international streaming package.

You can then watch Sunderland AFC in the UK or anywhere else in the world fully!

    Hi

This didn’t work for me. I have ip vanish and although the video was fine for the Gillingham game, it wouldn’t load for the AFC Wimbledon game. Using an android tablet to view the app, which the VPN did unblock for download.
I think Sland will win this division.

    • Hi Jeff, thanks for the comment. I think probably what has happened is for the first game it connected to one server and for the second game it connected to another which is possibly blocked. The way around this is to try a few different countries and individual servers. For example select Netherlands, then Amsterdam and then one of the 100 something servers. While one may work, another could be blocked. It’s usually best to start with the highest number server, eg; “ams-098” because they’re newer and less chance other users are using it. Alternatively some games are restricted to viewing from ‘black market’ countries only. For this you would need to connect to Luxembourg. So it’s worth trying that too.

    Hi Chris

I didn’t reply last week because the android tablet I was using has issues and I wasn’t sure if that was the reason I`m still blocked. But yesterday I connected from my desktop. Connected to my VPN to server 98 in Amsterdam, before I opened my browser and worked my way down to server 90, closing my browser until the VPN had reconnected. I`m still blocked. The first week I tried to connect I tried servers in different country’s and got a pop up saying I was trying to connect from different locations and then blocked me from all streams (even the radio!), so Ive been a bit reluctant to switch to a server in a different country during a game but I did try to connect with the Luxembourg server for the last 5mins. Still nothing.

    • It’s possible the entire service has been blocked. It’s worth trying somewhere a little further afield such New York – USA, also use InPrivate or Incognito mode on your web browser.

I always us ExpressVPN. I love it. I paid for the PeterBorough game only but signed up for International. Didn’t work. 20 minutes of pressing the hideous start button. No message of course. This is SAFC.

  4. Neil

Does it matter if I bought the safsee app before I purchased the vpn

  5. Antonio Prenelle

I have had nord vpn for several years and having purchased all over world service with safc for one hundred seventy pound i am only able to get matches on my ipad and unable to screen it on to tv’..having tried severel different countries with my vpn.i get a message stating only allow in overseas vewing dispite me moving my home service to FRANCE,,SWEDEN USA SPAIN..,CAN YOU ADVICE ME PLEASE

    • Christopher Seward

      Hi Antonio,

A lot of services block you from streaming from iPad to TV. If it’s working on the iPad then it’s likely this is the issue.

How exactly are you trying to view on the TV? Via a cable? Mirroring from iPad to TV? or some other method?

  6. Looks like SAFC are now actively blocking VPN services. I used to be able to connect using surfshark from Brussels but as of todat (5/2/2022) I am unable to connect. Sent an email and got this reply:

“Thanks letting us know about the issue.

We have investigated this for you and it appears there may be the possibility of a VPN in use.

When a VPN is in use, we cannot guarantee the compatibility and cannot support its usage.

When the system logs shows a VPN is in use, we cannot process a refund as this is strictly prohibited.

    Thank you for your understanding.”

Well I’m certainly not travelling 260miles each week to watch the utter shite they are dishing out at the moment. Currently 2-0 down to bottom of the league Bristol Rovers that haven’t won in the last 10 games FFS.
