The ultimate cycling event is back, Yes, that’s right, it’s the Tour de France. In this guide I’m going to show you how you can watch all of the action live online for free anywhere in the world.
The Tour de France is the crème de la crème of cycling events. If you want to see all the big clubs and riders on one of the most interesting cycling tour routes then this is the event to do it at.
Unfortunately though as the popularity of the Tour de France and cycling as a whole has increased it’s seen a shift from it being shown on free-to-air channels to it being shown on expensive cable channels.
If you don’t have access to those channels then your coverage of the event could be nonexistent. Below I’m going to show you how you can watch full coverage of the Tour de France 2018 no matter where you are in the world.
Watch the Tour de France 2018
Depending on what country you’re in depends on what kind of coverage you’ll have of the Tour de France.
In countries such as France and Australia they have great live coverage. In the UK the best coverage is reserved for cable channel Eurosport but there is some limited coverage on ITV 4 too.
In other countries you might have no access to watch the Tour de France 2018.
Luckily though there’s a really simple way you can tap into the French, Australian and UK coverage of the event. To do this you’ll need to get yourself a VPN app.
A VPN is a privacy tool that helps you disguise your location. It does this by allowing you to pretend you’re located somewhere else.
So let’s say you’re on holiday in Spain for example but you want to watch the Tour de France. You can use a VPN to make it appear as if you’re in the UK and watch the UK coverage. You can also use it to watch the French and Australian coverage too.
How to watch the Tour de France 2018
To watch the Tour de France 2018 without cable in your country you’ll need to get a VPN app. There are hundreds to choose from loads of different companies.
They all work much the same but some work better than others so it’s important to choose wisely. My three recommended VPN providers are:
You can use any of these three because they all work much the same. I’ve been using ExpressVPN because I find them to be slightly better and I’ll explain the process of how to use them below:
- Visit the ExpressVPN website and sign up for their service.
- Once signed up go to the Products section of their website and download the app type for your device.
- Install and open the app and login when required.
- Press Choose Location and select United Kingdom.
- It should automatically connect but if not press the Connect button.
The ExpressVPN app is easy to use.
Once the app has connected you’ll be able to watch the Tour de France coverage on the ITV website from the UK.
You’ll need to create an account if you don’t already have one and enter a UK Post Code. You can use any Post Code from the UK. Such as any of these, CR3 5NR, LL49 9HU or RM13 9BP.
You may also find better coverage from France or Australia. If you want to watch this coverage of the Tour de France 2018 then it’s entirely possible.
To watch the French coverage simply connect to France on the ExpressVPN app and then visit France TV Sport.
You can also opt to watch the Australian coverage. Again, connect to Australia on the ExpressVPN and then visit SBS Cycling Central.
You may get better quality streams and fewer chances of buffering if you use the country physically nearest to you. For example, if you’re in Spain then use either the French or UK coverage. If you’re in Hong Kong or another country in Asia then use the Australian coverage.
When is the Tour de France 2018 taking place
The 2018 Tour de France is set to kick off from 7th July 2018 and will run until 29th July 2018.
This year sees a few changes to the normal Tour de France style. Instead of starting from a nearby country the Tour will instead have its first three days on a French island just off the Atlantic coast.
It will also include the return of the Alpe d’Huez and pass through the Roubaix cobbles. With all these changes it’s likely to make the 2018 Tour de France one of the best for a good number of years.
