Love Island is the UK’s guilty televisual pleasure at the moment. Broadcast on ITV2, the series follows a group of beautiful 20-something’s living in a villa in Majorca, who have to pair up to survive on the show and stand a chance of winning the final cash prize.
The return of Love Island has proved an unexpected ratings winner and seen the show dominating tabloid headlines. Millions of viewers are joining in, but if you are an expat, or traveling overseas, you will be unable to watch the show without a VPN.
In this article, we will tell you everything you need to know to watch Love Island abroad using a VPN.
Watch Love Island abroad
Love Island is broadcast in the UK on ITV2 – a digital sister-station to the main ITV terrestrial channel. It is also available to stream online via the ITV Hub, where you can watch live streams or catch-up on all the latest news and action from the villa.
However, if you try to tune into the ITV Hub from outside the UK you will find yourself unable to stream anything. This is because the ITV Hub is only available to people in the UK and it uses geo-blocking technology to prevent people overseas from accessing it.
Geo-blocking works by looking at a user’s IP Address. This small bit of code tells all the sites you visit where you are located. If it says you are outside the UK, the ITV Hub will not allow you to stream any of their live and on-demand content.
But there is a way to get around this. If you use a VPN it is possible to fool the ITV Hub into thinking you are in the UK even when you are overseas, meaning you can watch Love Island no matter where you are.
A VPN works by redirecting all of your online data via an external server. When your data passes though this server, it is tagged with a new IP Address. If the server is in the UK, that IP Address tells the ITV Hub that your data originated in the UK and they therefore make all of their online streaming services available.
While each provider works slightly different, the basic process of using them to access the ITV Hub is broadly the same. To help you, we have put together a really simple step-by-step guide using our top pick, ExpressVPN as an example:
Visit the ExpressVPN website and sign up with them by following the simple onscreen instructions.
Go to the Products section of their website and download the best app for your device. These are also available in your app store.
Open the ExpressVPN app and use the activation code provided to get logged in.
Select a server based in the United Kingdom and click on it. It should connect automatically, but if it doesn’t click the Connect button.
Visit the ITV Hub website. If you don’t have an account already, you will need to sign up for one. This is a free and easy process. All you will need is a UK post code (such as W12 7TQ)
See our example video below to show you how easy it is.
When is Love Island shown?
Love Island is back with a brand-new series on ITV2 in 2018. It began on June 4th and is once again presented by Caroline Flack, with comedian Iain Stirling providing the tongue-in-cheek voiceover.
The series will run for eight weeks and is broadcast nightly at 9pm on ITV2 every day apart from Saturdays.
A total of sixteen contestants have entered the villa so far, with more expected to join during the course of the series. Islanders so far include Laura Anderson, 29, Dani Dyer, 21, Hayley Hughes, 21, Samira Mighty, 22, Niall Aslam, 23, Eyal Booker, 22, Adam Collard, 22, Jack Fincham, 26, Dr Alex George, 27, Wes Nelson, 20, Rosie Williams, 26, Josh Denzel, 26, Charlie Frederick, 23, and Megan Barton Hanson, 24.
There are a few changes in store for the new series of Love Island. Strict new rules put in place by ITV mean that this year’s show will include no full nudity and no sex between contestants will be permitted while they are drunk.
They have also responded to complaints about previous series which claimed that the show was glamorising smoking. This year no smoking will be permitted in the villa or the main garden area. A smoking area will be provided but contestants will have to use it alone and, for the most part, no action in this area will not be broadcast.
How to watch Love Island abroad Recap
Love Island has already begun on ITV2 and is expected to run for the next eight weeks. Live shows will be streamed on the ITV Hub, where you can also catch up on old shows and related content too.
If you are abroad, you will find yourself unable to access the ITV Hub. But as we have explained, if you use a VPN, you can get around this issue.
Any of our recommended providers will enable you to access the ITV Hub once you have connected to a UK-based server. And this means you can enjoy Love Island no matter where in the world you are.
