How to watch Les Misérables abroad

Les Miserables

If you were one of the many people who flocked to the cinema to watch the 2012 Les Misérables movie, only to be taken aback by the fact that it was all songs and no dialogue, then the BBC has a treat for you this Christmas.

They have produced a six-part adaptation of the Victor Hugo novel behind the musical with absolutely no songs whatsoever. It has a big-budget, an all-star cast, and promises to be one of the big televisual attractions of the festive period.

If you are in the UK, you can catch up with all the episodes on the BBC iPlayer, but if you are abroad, you will find that service blocked.

Unless you use a VPN that is and in this article we are going to explain how to do just that, so you can enjoy every episode of Les Misérables this Christmas.

Step 1: Choose a VPN

To enjoy Les Misérables abroad, you will need to sign up for a VPN, but choosing the right VPN can be a tough decision.

This is where we come in. We have tested all of the major VPNs with the BBC iPlayer overseas and identified the top three VPNs you can use to watch Les Misérables and all the BBC’s other programmes this festive season. They are:

  1. ExpressVPN – Our top recommendation
  2. CyberGhost VPN
  3. NordVPN

There are plenty of other VPNs that can also do a decent job, such as VPNHub and VyprVPN, but it is these three providers that, in our view, offer the best combination of privacy, security, and connection speeds needed for streaming shows on the BBC iPlayer.

If you want to find out more about any of these providers, take a look at our detailed reviews.

Step 2: Sign up for a VPN

Once you have chosen which VPN is right for you, the next step is to sign up. This process is a simple one, but it can varies a little from one provider to another. To make things as simple as possible, we will walk you through the process using our recommended provider ExpressVPN as an example.

Firstly, click on one of the links on this page to visit the ExpressVPN website.

Then click on the red Get ExpressVPN button in the middle of the page and you will be redirected to their payments page, which details the various subscription packages available.

You can choose to sign up for one month, six months, or one year. We recommend the annual subscription as this offers the best price and right now there is also a special deal giving you three extra months absolutely free.

Once you have chosen your preferred package, just enter the email address you want to use with the account, choose whether you want to pay by credit card, PayPal, Bitcoin or one of the many other payment options, and then follow the simple onscreen instructions to complete your payment.

Step 3: Download the VPN

Once you have completed payment, the next step is to download ExpressVPN onto your chosen device.

Click on the Products tab at the top of the ExpressVPN website and they will provide an automatic link to the right app for your device. All you have to do is click on the red Get ExpressVPN button to download it.

If you want to browse their other available apps, scroll down the page and you will find a range of apps for devices, browser plugins, console and Smart TV apps, and even manual setup guides.

Once you have clicked on the right add-on, follow the onscreen instructions to download and install the software. When installation is complete, login using your ExpressVPN account details given to you when you signed up.

To watch Les Misérables or any of the BBC other festive programmes, you will need to connect to a UK-based server.

To do this, simply click Choose Location (1), United Kingdom (2), and then Connect (3).

Then visit the iPlayer website or use the BBC iPlayer app as usual.
