The Grand National is back and in this guide you’ll learn how you can watch the entire race from anywhere in the world. So if you’re a Brit abroad or you just love the Grand National then read on.
The Grand National is the UK’s biggest horse racing event and is one of the biggest horse racing events in the world. This means that interest is high and if you’re like a lot of people you’re probably planning to throw a cheeky bet on the race.
Whether you’re a couple of pounds or a big bucks better you’ll want to watch all the action. If you’re abroad outside the UK then your options are limited. Most countries don’t show the event on TV and when they do it’s often restricted to expensive cable networks.
Below we’ll show you in just 6 steps how you can watch the Grand National online on ITV from any country in the world.
Watch Grand National 2018 abroad
The Grand National 2018 is being shown on ITV in the UK and at the same time will be streamed live online on ITV Hub.
If you’re in the UK you can simply watch online but if you’re outside the UK you’ll be blocked from watching.
To unblock this you need to get yourself an app called a VPN. A VPN allows you to change your online location so you appear in the UK and then are able to watch on ITV Hub.
VPN apps are completely legal and work on computers, laptops, tablets and phones. Just follow the steps below to get one and watch the national from anywhere in the world.
How to watch Grand National 2018 abroad:
- Go to the NordVPN website by clicking here and click Get NordVPN to sign-up to their service. (It’s cost a couple of pounds or dollars)
- Once you’ve signed up go to the VPN Apps area of the site and download the correct app for your device.
- Once it’s downloaded install the app then run it and login with the account details you created when signing up.
- On the map locate and select the United Kingdom and click on it.
- The app should start connecting but if not click the Connect power button.
- Once it’s connected head over to the ITV Hub website.
Once you’re connected and on the ITV Hub website you’ll be able to stream all the Grant National live action and any pre-build up.
Create an ITV Hub account
If you don’t already have an ITV Hub account you’ll need to create one. However, the process is really simple and they only need a few details from you.
You’ll need to enter your name and address and a UK Post Code. You can use any UK Post Code. A few to try are:
- NE1 6SG
- HA5 4PF
- WD4 8EE
- DY5 3LA
Or you can use a website like FakeAddressGenerator if you need more ideas.
When is the Grand National on TV?
This year the Grand National takes place on Saturday April 14th, 2018.
Coverage of the event will start from around 4 pm with the actual main race taking place at 5:15 pm.
With a VPN from NordVPN as explained above you’ll be able to watch the entire show including the main race live.
As usual, the famous race takes place at the Aintree racecourse in Liverpool, England.
The race will be known this year as the Randox Health Grand National after they took over the sponsorship of the event from prior sponsors Crabbie’s.
If you’re looking for a tip to put a bet on then one of the favourites is Blaklion so if you’re undecided who to back then they’re worth a punt.
Are there alternative VPN services?
Our recommended VPN service for watching the Grand National 2018 is NordVPN because when testing we found them to work best with ITV Hub which the national is being shown on.
They’re also competitively priced and have really easy to use apps.
If you want to take a look at some alternatives though we recommend you check out the following three services who will also be suitable for watching the Grand National:
- CyberGhost VPN
Just click on one of their names to visit their site and sign up. The process is exactly the same as with NordVPN so you can basically just follow the same instructions from above.
What about a Free VPN service?
There are plenty of “Free” VPN services but we really don’t recommend them for watching the Grand National for many reasons.
The first is they’re overused so are slow. They’re really not good for streaming live video and usually end up buffering a lot which is not what you want when you’re trying to enjoy the race.
They’re also not good for your online security because they can utilise your device or connection to power their service or inject things like adverts into your connection. For security reasons, they’re best avoided.
