If sport is your passion then you can’t have helped but to have heard of ESPN+ and in this article, I’ll be showing you how you can watch in the UK.
ESPN+ is the online streaming service that burst onto the scene in America a few years back. Not only did it bring competition to the American online sports streaming market but with prices from just $4.99 per month it also paved the way for budget premium sports streaming.
Sadly though, as much impact has ESPN+ has had on the American market it hasn’t made its way to the UK as a standalone service. Although you can access ESPN through some channels in the UK, you can’t officially subscribe to the ESPN+ service on its own.
That is unless you use a ‘VPN‘ app. A VPN allows you to sign up for and watch ESPN+ in the UK and below I’ll show you how.
How to watch ESPN Plus in the UK
To watch ESPN+ in the UK, you’ll need to get a VPN app. It’s a privacy app that lets you alter your location and disguise where you are. It enables you to unblock ESPN+ and watch in the UK.
… but don’t worry – VPN apps are entirely legal!
You first need to choose a VPN, I use and recommend ExpressVPN but there are loads of others available like CyberGhostVPN, NordVPN, IPVanish, PrivateInternetAccess, the list is endless.
Follow the steps below to get watching ESPN+ in the UK. I’m using ExpressVPN in my example.
Step 1
You first need to sign up to one of the VPN services mentioned above.
- Visit the ExpressVPN website or one of the other services listed above.
- Press ‘Get ExpressVPN‘.
- Choose a subscription length. It’s nearly 50% cheaper to take a yearly subscription than pay monthly.
- Complete the sign-up process.

Step 2
Now download the VPN app.
- Visit the ‘Products‘ area of the ExpressVPN website and choose the device you want to watch on.
- Download and install the app for your device.
Step 3
Next, connect to the United States to disguise your location.
- Open the ExpressVPN app and login.
- Press ‘Selected Location‘ (1) or the three dots icon ‘…‘.
- Then press ‘United States‘ (2).
- Press ‘Connect‘ (3) or wait for the app to connect automatically.
Watch ESPN+ using ExpressVPN.
Step 4
Now the app has connected you appear like you’re in the United States. You now need to sign up for ESPN+.
- Visit the ESPN+ website.
- Press the ‘Start My 7 Day Free Trial‘ button.
- Then press ‘Sign Up‘.
- Enter your details such as your name, email address and choose a password.
- Press ‘Sign Up‘.
- Then enter your payment details.
- You will need to enter a US Zip Code (like a Post Code) use any such as 94024, 10003 or 30303.
- Accept the Privacy Policy and then press ‘Start 7 Day Free Trial‘.
When your payment details are accepted press ‘Get Started‘.
What do I do when I’ve completed sign up?
Now you’ve completed sign up you’re free to watch ESPN+ in the UK as if you were in America.
Have a browse around their website to find the sports you want to watch.
Don’t forget you need to stay connected to the VPN at all times to watch.
Avoiding Location Services issues
If you’re using the ESPN+ mobile app, then you will likely face some location services issues. ESPN+ will ask for access to your GPS location so it can check that you’re in the United States.
As you can imagine, this is problematic and will cause ESPN+ to be blocked to you whether you use a VPN or not.
However, there is a way around this. Surfshark VPN allows you to spoof your GPS location to match your VPNs location settings so that you can bypass any location service issues. This will give you full access to ESPN+ from the UK or anywhere in the world.
Can I watch ESPN+ for free in the UK?
ESPN+ is a subscription service, and prices start from just $4.99 per month which is approximately £3.82 at current rates.
There is a free trial available that lasts for 7-days, and you won’t be charged anything until the 7-days have passed.
If you only want to watch a specific event such as your favourite team play or the final of a competition, then you can sign up for the free trial and cancel after you’ve watched. You then won’t have to pay anything for ESPN+.
You will still need to pay for the VPN service, and while the 12-month package is much cheaper, you can sign up for a minimum of just 1-month if you choose.

Can I get a free VPN for ESPN+?
Free VPN services do exist, but generally, they’re pretty mediocre.
The biggest negative when using them for ESPN+ is their speed. With thousands of users all climbing onto the same service it means the speeds are inferior. For streaming video, this is a huge negative and means you’ll likely end up with buffering and other low-quality playback issues.
It’s not the way I want to watch my favourite live sports!
More seriously, free VPN services can put your privacy, and the security of you’re device at risk. They’ve been known to record details of what you’re doing sharing those details with unknowns or passing them through unregulated channels in countries such as China.
They’ve also been known to install malware and other trojans. After all, if you’re not paying for the service, they want to recoup their costs somehow.
What can I watch on ESPN+?
ESPN+ has everything from live sport, recorded sport and unique shows.
Of course, there’s a massive covering of American sports so if you love your Major League Baseball, NHL, MLS and College Football there’s a mass of choice here.
It’s not just restricted to American only sports because they also show the likes of World Rugby, EFL, Serie A football, Wimbledon, UFC, the US Open and a whole host more.
There are also loads of ESPN+ originals which include films such as Trojan War, The Prince of Pennsylvania, Chasing Tyson and the Four Falls of Buffalo.
What devices can I watch ESPN+ on?
When watching ESPN+ in the UK using a VPN from ExpressVPN the easiest way is to watch on your computer or laptop.
There are apps for a range of devices though so you can easily watch on your tablet or phone. You can even watch on TV using their Amazon Fire TV app too.
In Summary
To watch ESPN+ in the UK, you’ll need a VPN from ExpressVPN and a credit/debit card to sign up for an account.
First sign up for ExpressVPN, remember their yearly package is nearly 50% cheaper than paying monthly so if you plan to watch ESPN+ into the future, then you’ll make the most significant savings doing it this way.
Once you’ve got ExpressVPN connect to the United States. Then sign up for an ESPN+ account. You can get a free 7-day trial if you want to test their service.
That’s all there is to it. You can now live stream all your favourite sports on ESPN+ right at home (or on the move) in the UK.
Christopher I followed the instructions above and everything works fine until I go to watch an event as the ESPN+ app wants to access your location from your settings too……so although I am connected via a VPN its uses the iphone or ipad GPS and validates….is there a way around this?
I would recommend putting your iPhone / iPad into “Flight Mode” and then re-enabling Wi-Fi. Try again.
If this doesn’t work you’ll be able to get a full refund for the VPN service. Thanks for letting us know.
Cannot stream as the ESPN+app requires location services to be enables. Doesn’t work on flight mode either. Any work around found yet?
Hi Clare,
If you’re trying to watch on a mobile device (eg Android) you may want to consider using Surfshark VPN. It allows you to change your GPS location which will alter your location services to the same city as the VPN server you connect to.
Hi there,
I have followed your instructions on how to get espn+ but when i try to register my details with espn i get an error message stating their is a problem with my registration, can you help please
Hi David,
Does it specific the error? Difficult to know without knowing exactly what the error message is.
Have you tried connecting to a different US city and see if you get the same result?
From the UK using the VPN Express, signing up for the ESPN+ you need a zip code. Putting a zip code in, the transaction doesn’t work with a UK Visa or Mastercard.
Hi Alistair,
In this instance you may need to use a service such as Statescard which you can find via Google.
