Amazon Prime Video is one of the most popular web streaming sites in the world, with tons of titles that will keep you busy for months.

However, it does have one pretty serious flaw, and that is the fact that it is not available everywhere. And even in the regions in which it is available, viewers often do not have access to the same titles.

You can watch your Amazon account in your home country, but when you travel abroad, it is a different matter.

So, if you plan to travel abroad or you want to expand what’s available to you, then you need to know how to enjoy Amazon Prime abroad.

Quick-Guide: How watch Amazon Prime overseas

  1. Sign up for ExpressVPN.
  2. Download and login to their app.
  3. Select the United Kingdom and tap Connect.
  4. Connect and head to Amazon Prime.

Fortunately for you, there is a simple way to watch Amazon Prime UK overseas and to open up new and exclusive content from Amazon Prime libraries in different countries.

Keep scrolling down to learn all the information you need to know based on our exclusive testing.

What do you need to get watching?

To watch Amazon Prime Video in another country, you’ll need an additional app called a Virtual Private Network (VPN for short).

But what is it exactly?

VPNs were initially invented to allow people to stay private online and avoid anyone snooping on what they’re doing.

They are still a popular online security and privacy tool, but a quirk of how they work means that if you want to stream Amazon Prime video content and, indeed, many streaming platforms, they make it possible.

How does a VPN help you watch Amazon Prime Video?

VPN services work by redirecting user data through an encrypted tunnel that secures it and then through an external server that will replace your IP Addresses with different IP Addresses.

If you choose a UK server on your secure VPN, you will get a UK IP Address and can unblock Amazon Prime location restrictions and access your Amazon Prime subscription account no matter where you are.

That means you can watch Amazon Prime UK anywhere.

Where to get a VPN for Prime?

It is becoming challenging to get a VPN that allows Amazon Prime account holders to stream Amazon Prime Video when they travel abroad.

Unblocking Prime Video is tough because Amazon routinely tries to stop subscribers from using a VPN to access their service in exactly the same way that other popular streaming sites like Netflix, HBO Max, and BBC iPlayer do.

Therefore it is not enough just to Google ‘VPN’ and then pick the first VPN provider you see. You need to find the right Amazon Prime VPN, and that requires a little bit more research.

The good news is that we have done the hard yards for you in this guide by testing all the top VPNs to see which is best.

How to choose the best VPN for Amazon Prime video

If you want to use a VPN to watch Amazon Prime video overseas, you will need to find a VPN provider that offers certain key features:

  • Works with Amazon Prime Video – Not all VPNs can unblock Amazon Prime UK, so make sure you choose a provider that can and which can unblock the Amazon Prime Video location you want to access.
  • Fast connection speeds – Streaming sites require fast internet connections, and while this depends to an extent on your internet service provider, a slow VPN will affect performance.
  • Apps – Most VPN service providers offer a range of apps but whether you watch Amazon Prime Video UK on mobile devices, desktop devices, smart TVs, Android TV, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, or something else, make sure there is an app for your device before signing up.
  • Servers – Check that your VPN has servers where you need them. If you want to unblock Amazon Prime Video UK, make sure there is a good UK VPN server selection. If you want to unblock the Amazon Prime Video Australia library, be sure there is a VPN server located in Oz.

Best VPN for Amazon Prime video

ExpressVPN is the best VPN to use with Amazon Prime Video UK according to our tests and information.

Not only does it let you access Amazon Prime UK and the US Amazon Prime video, but it also offers reasonable prices, has a 30-day money-back guarantee and accepts all the popular payment method options.

It also works with many other streaming sites, including Netflix and other popular streaming sites. We found it extremely easy to use.

Alternatively, there are NordVPN and CyberGhost that work and have many of the same features, such as the money-back guarantee; although our tests found these services can be a bit more hit-and-miss, you’re free to pick.

How to unblock Amazon Prime video with a VPN?

Amazon Prime Video members who want to be able to access the UK version of Amazon Prime Video from anywhere in the world in the same way as in their home country will need a VPN.

Our recommended VPN is ExpressVPN, but you can also watch Prime Video overseas with NordVPN and CyberGhost VPN too.

Once you have chosen your preferred VPN, setting everything up is easy. All you need to do is follow these simple steps.

Step 1

Visit the ExpressVPN website, choose a payment plan and enter your payment details.

Step 2

Select the device you wish to watch Prime video on (mobile, desktop, smart TV) and download the ExpressVPN app. You should always do this from either the ExpressVPN website or the iOS or Google Play store.

Step 3

After downloading the app, install it on your device, and use the login details you were given when you signed up to log in.

Step 4

Connect to a VPN server in the United Kingdom or United States, the appropriate country for the version of Amazon Prime video you wish to access.

ExpressVPN connecting to the UK

Use ExpressVPN to watch in any country.

You will now be able to watch Prime Video no matter where in the world you are. If you haven’t already, you will need to download the Amazon Prime video app and log into your Amazon account too. Alternatively, you can access Amazon Prime content via the Amazon UK website too.

If you have any problems connecting or get an error message, try a different server.

If problems persist, contact either the VPN’s customer support or the Amazon Customer service team for help (if its about your Amazon account).

Why is accessing Amazon Prime video so difficult?

You might be wondering why it is so tricky to watch Amazon Prime videos overseas and what is so special about it.

Our information and testing show that there are a few reasons for the difficulties.

One is the fact that Amazon has been cracking down on VPNs even more than Netflix.

They don’t want you watching Amazon Prime video using a VPN connection or to let you watch movies or other Prime video content in a country outside your home country due mostly to distribution and other reasons.

VPN providers allow you to do this, and even if that’s not what you are using it for, but instead, you are trying to protect your internet traffic or online privacy, Amazon doesn’t care.

However, you probably want to stream movies and watch videos while abroad, hence why you are looking for a streaming VPN that can work with your compatible devices, including Smart TVs and other streaming platforms like BBC iPlayer, HBO Max, and Netflix Instant video.

A VPN is the best way to do this, as the best VPNs can unblock them all. And as we have explained, ExpressVPN is the best Amazon Prime VPN on the market at the moment.

Do I need an Amazon Prime account?

Unfortunately, you do, as using a VPN to access the service is not enough to watch anything on Amazon Prime video outside the UK or the US, for that matter.

The best you can do is to visit the Amazon website to get a free trial that will last for 30 days, but you will still have to link your payment method and remember to cancel if it’s not for you.

If you are new to Amazon Prime Video, you will get an entire month to decide whether or not it is worth paying for Amazon instant video.

If you’ve already got an Amazon Prime video account and already use it to watch movies and other Prime video content, then you just need the VPN app, an internet connection, and to follow the instructions we have already shared.

Amazon Prime Video account + VPN service, remember.

Why EU rules no longer apply for UK users

Now that the United Kingdom has left the European Union, there are multiple changes to our relationship.

Under a European Union regulation known as the EU Portability Regulation, many streaming services, including Amazon Prime Video were required to make their video content available to users and residents across the EU.

Now, the UK no longer falls under this regulation, and UK-based streamers are no longer obliged to let their subscribers access content when they travel.

Most now do not, such as Sky, which explains in a helpful guide on their website that “from 1 January 2021, you won’t be able to stream Sky outside the UK…”

We have explained this further in our news article.

The good news is that thanks to a VPN, this shouldn’t be a big problem for you.

Choosing one of the best VPNs, such as the ones recommended in this guide, means you should still be able to change your VPN IP Address by connecting to a different server, and access Amazon Prime video and all other streaming sites anywhere.

Is it legal to watch Amazon Prime Video from abroad?

The simple answer to this is yes, but if we are honest, it is a bit more complicated than that.

Firstly, with the exception of a handful of authoritarian states like China and Russia, it is legal to use a VPN anywhere. It is also legal to stream Amazon Prime Video in most countries too.

However, there is nothing in the terms & conditions that state using a VPN with Amazon Prime video breaks their rules.

We are not aware of any instances where someone has lost access to their account for using a VPN. Their focus is on blocking VPNs rather than penalising users.

If you are concerned about this, be sure to have your VPN’s kill switch enabled. This will cut your internet connection if your VPN drops out, so Amazon should never be able to tell you are using one. Not all VPNs have one, so check that your chosen one does.

How to watch on a TV abroad

Using a streaming site like Amazon Prime video or listening to Prime music overseas with the help of a VPN to change your IP Address is quite straightforward, as we have already shown.

But, if we are honest, a lot of people prefer to watch their favourite movies and TV shows or prime video titles on the big screen of a smart TV.

This can be done. The Amazon Prime video app can be downloaded onto a number of these devices as well as Apple TV and other such devices, as can the ExpressVPN app. Together, they will let you watch Amazon Prime UK outside the UK.

However, our advice would be to stick to a mobile device or a laptop if you want a really reliable Amazon Prime Video UK streaming experience.

But if you want to try streaming movies or anything from the content library on your TV abroad (US Amazon Prime or any other streaming service), here are two methods that can work:

An Amazon Fire TV stick is a great portable streaming device that can be plugged into just about any TV set (as long as it has a USB slot) and is ideal for taking your streaming platforms, including Amazon Prime video, on holiday.

Overseas, you will still need to connect to a VPN server in the appropriate Amazon Prime video location to access these services.

Fortunately, a lot of VPNs can be used with a Fire TV Stick to unblock streaming services overseas.

The best VPNs will have a dedicated Amazon app that can be downloaded from the Amazon site app store onto all Amazon streaming devices and used just as you would on your laptop or smartphone.

ExpressVPN is our pick of the best VPNs for Fire TV Stick too.

Their app is easy to download and use and is able to evade geo-restrictions and unblock Amazon Prime video and just about any other popular streaming service you can think of and let you watch all your favourite movies and TV shows without worrying about slow speeds.

Streamlocator is a new tool that makes streaming your favourite shows and movies easy on your chosen streaming service no matter where in the world you are.

It is a standalone router that requires no installation, incurs no loss of speed, has no settings to fiddle with, and can be used with an unlimited number of devices.

All you have to do is buy the hardware online and then pay their monthly subscription. When the router arrives, you just need to plug it into your existing router, and you are able to stream.

Then, fire up your favourite streaming platform, including Amazon Prime Video, and Streamlocator will automatically start to unblock it using smart DNS no matter where in the world you are.

It is really easy to use and for devices like a smart TV where it can be tricky to connect a VPN.

What can you watch on Amazon Prime video?

Amazon Prime Video is a global streaming service, and the content varies depending on where in the world you are.

For example, Amazon Prime UK subscribers will not get to watch all of the same shows that are available in the US or Australian libraries even though they use the same Prime video app.

Some shows and movies are the same. Amazon Original productions are available to all Amazon Prime subscribers, while there are some other titles for which Amazon Prime holds the global rights.

In this section, we are going to give you a rundown of some of the most popular Amazon Prime shows and our favourite exclusive content that is available:

  • The Grand Tour – Clarkson, Hammond, and May are transported from Top Gear to their new Amazon show with the same hilarious consequences for all Amazon Prime UK viewers to laugh out loud at.
  • Clarkson’s Farm – Clarkson’s goes it alone with his loyal sidekick Caleb in this hilarious show following his adventures on his Oxfordshire farm.
  • Lovestruck High – Transplants 15 UK singles to a US High School setting to see if they can find love before the Prom.
  • Good Omens – Amazon’s adaptation of the Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman novel starring Michael Sheen and David Tennant
  • The Marvellous Mrs Maisel – Period comedy drama following the life of a Jewish housewife who tries her hand at stand-up comedy in the 1950s.
  • Reacher – The hotly anticipated adaptation of the wildly popular Tom Clancy novels about Jack Reacher.
  • Leonardo – Poldark’s Aiden Turner is back on our screens as the Rennaisance artist and scientist Leonardo da Vinci.

Watching Prime video also means you can enjoy a whole host of movies too, including such gems as:

  • Parasite – An Oscar-winning South Korean thriller/horror film that’s already a sure-fire classic.
  • The Big Sick – A mixed-race rom-com with hilarity and heartache in equal measure.
  • Red, White, and Royal Blue – An Amazon Original in which the heir to the British throne falls in love with the son of the US President.
  • The Green Knight – Dev Patel stars in this highly anticipated retelling of the Arthurian legend.
  • Kandahar – Gerard Butler stars in this epic set during the Afghan conflict.
  • The Whale – Brendan Fraser’s triumphant return to the big screen playing a morbidly obese man.
  • Everything Everywhere All At Once – The multi-Oscar award winning multiverse epic.

There is much, much more to enjoy across all the Amazon Prime video libraries, but hopefully, this gives just a taster of what enjoyments there are on offer.

As mentioned, our recommended Amazon Prime VPN is great for staying private and secure online when you want to as well.

This stops advertisers and others from sneaking in on what you’re doing online. Meaning you can browse the web securely as well as enjoy shows and movies on Amazon Prime UK and other Amazon Prime libraries.

A VPN will also encrypt all of your online data to help keep you secure from hackers and government spies as well. But there is no denying that watching streaming services like Amazon Prime is a key reason many people use a VPN. It’s certainly one of the reasons we do.

This is why many VPNs are now focusing on providing large server networks. With them, you can unblock services like BBC iPlayer, which is usually only available in the UK, or different regions of Netflix, which differs from country to country.

Theoretically, the answer to this question is yes.

Certainly, the Amazon Prime video thirty-day free trial means you can watch their shows and films for free, albeit only for a limited time period.

A quick Google search will reveal that there are lots of free services available to download and use too. However, this is where the fairy tale ends.

Firstly, we are not aware of any free VPN that is able to unblock Amazon Prime video. They don’t work, and their business model gives them no incentive to make themselves work either.

Most free Virtual Private Networks come with bandwidth limitations which makes them useless for streaming anything.

A cost free VPN also typically has limited server networks, and these tend to be in no more than one or two countries. So, even if you are lucky enough to find one in the country you need, it will be overloaded with other users.

Some free providers even block or throttle streaming services themselves because of the excessive demands they can place on their network.

Then there are the many security risks that come with a free service. A lot are bundled together with malware and spyware; many are linked to Chinese companies and send your data back to Beijing, while some just harvest user data and sell it to anyone willing to pay.

Some free VPNs don’t even bother to encrypt anything and are essentially data farms rather than anything resembling a real VPN.

Our advice, based on our testing and personal experience, is to not waste your time with free VPNs. Instead, sign up for a premium VPN and take advantage of the Amazon Prime free trial.

  1. Joe

I am based in the UK and have just subscribed to IPVanish (IPV) and installed the app on my Amazon Fire TV 4K (version 2). The installation was nice and simple and I have configured the settings for Country: UK – City: Best available – Server: Best available.

Once I have enabled a VPN connection I get partial service but there are problems. I can browse Amazon Prime UK movies, TV etc, but when I try to play anything I get an error code: INVALID_GEO_IP. Also Netflix loads, gives great connection speeds and all servers connect, it will play a trailer at the beginning of a movie or TV show but as soon as the movie or show should start I get an error saying I am using a proxy or blocker, and nothing plays.

BBC iPlayer, ITV, Ch4 and My5 also do not work.

I have tried playing with the settings to select specific cities in the UK to see if it would work but experienced the same issues.

I mainly wanted a VPN to work with Amazon Prime and the terrestrial channels when I am outside the UK and was under the impression that this was exactly what IPV was meant to do.

Since it appears that Amazon are blocking IPV, I have contacted IPVanish support to ask if there any workarounds or do I need to seek an alternative solution?

    • VPNCompare

      Hi Joe,

You seem to have a big list of issues so you’re right to contact IPVanish support as they’ll be best suited to help you.

As it appears you can’t get anything to work I would guess that something is not working correctly. At the very least some services should work and others not.

Netflix unfortunately won’t work as they block almost all VPN providers. The other services should however work.

We’re going to try on our Fire TV and let you know. We’ll get back to you.
