How to watch Amazon Prime abroad

Amazon Prime

Amazon Prime is one of the most popular web streaming services in the world, with tons of titles that will keep you busy for months.

However, it does have one pretty serious flaw, and that is the fact that it is not available everywhere.

Even the regions in which it is available, viewers often do not have access to the same titles.

You can watch your Amazon account in your home country but when you travel abroad, it is a different matter.

So, if you plan to travel abroad, or you want to expand what's available to you then this is the guide you need.

Fortunately for you, there is a simple way to get more and watch overseas using a VPN app to watch Amazon Prime video.

Keep scrolling down to learn all the information you need to know.

What do you need to get watching?

To watch Amazon Prime video in another country you'll need an additional app called a Virtual Private Network (VPN for short).

But what is it exactly?

Quite simply, it is the best technology for unblocking foreign titles.

It was initially invented to allow people to stay private online and avoid anyone snooping on what they're doing.

Thankfully for prime members they're great for accessing different regions to watch Amazon Prime video and avoid geo restrictions wherever you are.

Where to get a VPN for Prime?

It is becoming challenging to get a VPN that allows Prime members to watch Amazon instant video when you travel abroad.

When you eliminate the ones that Amazon Prime has blocked, you are left with only a handful of services that work.

ExpressVPN is one of the best ones for the job, according to our tests and information.

Not only does it work with the United Kingdom and the US Amazon Prime Video, but it also offers reasonable prices, has a 30-day money-back guarantee, and works with a load of other services including Netflix and other video content providers.

Alternatively, there are NordVPN and CyberGhost that might work and have many of the same features such as the money-back guarantee, although these services can be hit and miss, but you're free to pick.

How to unblock Amazon Prime with a VPN?

Prime members who want to be able to access Amazon Prime Video from anywhere in the world in the same way as in your home country will need a VPN.

By using one you can watch amazon prime video overseas around the world exactly as in your home country.

If this sounds good enough to you, then here is the information that you need to get a VPN service and watch Amazon Prime:

  1. Start by choosing your provider. We recommend ExpressVPN.
  2. Choose a payment plan and enter your payment details.
  3. Select a device you wish to watch Amazon Prime on and download the VPN compatible device app. You can do it from the website, or the appropriate app store if you prefer watching on mobile or tablet.
  4. After downloading the app, install it on the compatible device, and as a member just use the login details you were given when you signed up.
  5. Connect to a VPN server in the United Kingdom or United States depending on which version of Prime you wish to access.
  6. You will now be able to watch Amazon instant video no matter where in the world you are.

Why is accessing Prime so difficult?

You might be wondering why it is so tricky to watch Amazon instant Video abroad, and what is so special about it?

Our information is that there are a few reasons for the difficulties.

One piece of information is the fact that Amazon has been cracking down on VPNs even more than Netflix, and that is saying quite a bit of how little tolerance for VPN tech the service has.

They don't want you to watch your favourite movies and TV shows or any Amazon Originals on Amazon Prime in a country outside your home country due to distribution and other reasons.

However, you probably want to watch while abroad.

A VPN is the best way to do this. It can change your IP Address in a way that Amazon Prime can't recognise.

Do I need an Amazon Prime account?

Unfortunately, you do, as using a VPN to access the service is not enough to watch anything on Amazon Prime outside the UK or the US for that matter.

The best you can do is to get a free trial that will last for 30 days, but you will still have to link your payment method and remember to cancel if it's not for you.

If you are new to Prime Video, you will get an entire month to decide whether or not it is worth paying for it.

If you've already got an Amazon Prime Video account, then you just need the VPN app.

Why EU rules no longer apply for UK users

Now that the United Kingdom has left the European Union, there are multiple changes to our relationship.

Under a European Union regulation known as the EU Portability Regulation, all streaming services including Amazon Prime video were required to make their video content available to users and residents across the EU.

Now, the UK no longer falls under this regulation and UK-based streamers are no longer obliged to let their subscribers access content when they travel.

Most now do not such as Sky which explains in a help guide on their website that “from 1 January 2021, you won't be able to stream Sky outside the UK…”

We have explained this further in our news article.

The good news is that thanks to a VPN, this shouldn't be a big problem for you.

Choosing a provider such as the ones recommended in this guide means you should still be able to change your IP Address and access Amazon Prime video and all other streaming services anywhere.

How to watch on a TV abroad

Using a streaming service like Amazon Prime video or listen to prime music overseas with the help of a VPN to change your IP Address is quite straightforward.

But if we are honest, a lot of people prefer to watch their favourite movies and TV shows or prime video titles on a big screen.

There are a couple of ways that you can do this although we would stress at the top that these solutions can be a bit hit and miss when it comes to Amazon Prime video .

Our advice would be to stick to a mobile device or a laptop if you want a really reliable streaming experience. But if you want to try streaming movies or anything from the content library on your TV abroad (US Amazon Prime or any other streaming service), here are two methods that can work:

1. Use a Fire TV Stick

An Amazon Fire TV stick is a great portable streaming device that can be plugged into just about any TV set (as long as it has a USB slot) and is ideal for taking your streaming services on holiday.

Overseas, you will still need a VPN to access these services.

Fortunately, a lot of VPNs can be used with a Fire TV Stick to unblock streaming services overseas.

The best VPNs will have a dedicated Amazon app that can be downloaded from the Amazon app store and used just as you would on your laptop or smartphone.

ExpressVPN is our pick of the best VPNs for Fire TV Stick.

Their app is easy to download and use and is able to evade geo restrictions and unblock Amazon Prime video and just about any other streaming service you can think of and let you watch all your favourite movies and TV shows.

2. Use Streamlocator

Streamlocator is a new tool that makes streaming your favourite shows and movies easy on your chosen streaming service no matter where in the world you are.

It is a standalone router that requires no installation, incurs no loss of speed, has no settings to fiddle with, and can be used with an unlimited number of devices.

All you have to do is buy the hardware online and then pay their monthly subscription. When the router arrives, you just need to plug it into your existing router and you are able to stream.

Then, fire up your favourite streaming platform including Amazon Prime video and Streamlocator will automatically start to unblock it using smart DNS no matter where in the world you are.

It really easy to use and for devices like a smart TV where it can be tricky to connect a VPN.

What else can I do with the VPN app?

As mentioned, VPN is great for staying private online when you want to.

This stops advertisers and others from sneaking in on what you're doing online. Meaning you can browse the web securely.

Other than that, its primary use these days is for accessing various streaming services.

This is why many VPNs are now focusing on providing large server networks. With them, you can unblock services like BBC iPlayer, which is usually only available in the UK, or different regions of Netflix, which differs from country to country.

Summary

Amazon Prime video is one of the most popular and sought after services around. A VPN allows you to watch anywhere in the world.

Unfortunately, it is also one that seems to care the most about only providing its services to those it intends to provide them to.

In other words, if you live somewhere that Amazon Prime video doesn't really care about, your chances of getting to enjoy its content are slim.

The solution that allows you to watch Amazon Prime abroad is to use a VPN from ExpressVPN or the few other services that work with their service.

Sign up, download their app, connect to the US or UK and enjoy streaming Amazon Prime abroad anywhere.

  1. Joe

I am based in the UK and have just subscribed to IPVanish (IPV) and installed the app on my Amazon Fire TV 4K (version 2). The installation was nice and simple and I have configured the settings for Country: UK – City: Best available – Server: Best available.

Once I have enabled a VPN connection I get partial service but there are problems. I can browse Amazon Prime UK movies, TV etc, but when I try to play anything I get an error code: INVALID_GEO_IP. Also Netflix loads, gives great connection speeds and all servers connect, it will play a trailer at the beginning of a movie or TV show but as soon as the movie or show should start I get an error saying I am using a proxy or blocker, and nothing plays.

BBC iPlayer, ITV, Ch4 and My5 also do not work.

I have tried playing with the settings to select specific cities in the UK to see if it would work but experienced the same issues.

I mainly wanted a VPN to work with Amazon Prime and the terrestrial channels when I am outside the UK and was under the impression that this was exactly what IPV was meant to do.

Since it appears that Amazon are blocking IPV, I have contacted IPVanish support to ask if there any workarounds or do I need to seek an alternative solution?

      Hi Joe,

You seem to have a big list of issues so you’re right to contact IPVanish support as they’ll be best suited to help you.

As it appears you can’t get anything to work I would guess that something is not working correctly. At the very least some services should work and others not.

Netflix unfortunately won’t work as they block almost all VPN providers. The other services should however work.

We’re going to try on our Fire TV and let you know. We’ll get back to you.
