Our standout VPN service providers recommendation for Sky Broadband users is ExpressVPN.

This provider has a huge server network spread across 94 countries. This includes four locations and hundreds of servers in the UK meaning that they can just about guarantee a fast and reliable internet connection to all their users in this country.

This is especially helpful to users connecting on Sky Broadband's fast packages as it means your internet connection speeds should not be undermined by a slow VPN connection. It also supports peer-to-peer, where you can achieve maximum speed while using a VPN.

ExpressVPN is also superb at unblocking streaming services, and it can easily bypass Sky Broadband Shield.

NordVPN is effective at unblocking streaming services like Sky Go, whether you want to access international platforms at home on your Sky Broadband account or use things like Sky Go when you are abroad. Sky Broadband Shield is no match for it.

You also get up to six simultaneous connections, a 30-day money-back guarantee, and some of the lowest prices of any premium VPN on the market. Another great choice.

If you ever have a problem that you can't figure out, whether it is with blocked websites, security features, or some other aspect of using a VPN – its live chat support is there for you.

Pros
  • Brilliant for streaming
  • Good range of apps
  • Decent download speeds
  • Servers in 3 UK cities
Cons
  • No log policy unaudited

Naturally, it is an excellent choice for bypassing Sky Broadband Shield and accessing any Sky Broadband package.

Surfshark's encryption and security provisions are up there with the best but their privacy policies do involve more connection logs than we would like. But they are great at unblocking streaming services like Sky Go, both when you are abroad and right here in the UK on your Sky UK connection.

Connection speeds are also impressive with Surfshark and for such a young VPN there are a good selection of apps for most devices too. Even better, Surfshark gives you unlimited connections which mean you can protect all your devices and those of your family with a single account.

VPN.ac offers impressive apps for most desktop and mobile devices.

Its VPN server network is small but the UK and neighbouring EU countries are both well represented. It is reasonably good at unblocking Netflix and the BBC iPlayer, as well as Sky Go, but if you want to access other premium platforms, you may have less luck.

But, there are six simultaneous connections, a 30-day money-back guarantee, and reasonable prices which makes VPN.ac well worth considering.

  • Biggest range of server locations
  • Apps for most devices
  • Giftcard payments accepted
  • Time proven provider
Cons
  • Unaudited no log policy
  • Registered in the UK
  • Owns ‘VPN Review' websites

PIA offers apps for all the big devices but if you venture outside the most popular ones, you will have to be check that it is covered. Connection speeds are good across all of these apps but they are not the fastest we have tested. Privacy and security protections are robust.

When it comes to streaming services. PIA is not perfect. It can unblock certain Netflix channels but not much else so if you want to stream content from other online platforms on your Sky Broadband service, you will need to choose a different provider.

Why you need a VPN for Sky Broadband

There are a number of clear benefits to using the best VPN for Sky Broadband, we've rounded up the top ones here:

1. Avoid throttling

If you've read Sky's terms and conditions in the past you may find reference to ‘traffic management'. This is a way of slowing your internet should you make heavy use of it.

This is usually applied to services like P2P, Usenet and sometimes even streaming.

Currently, Sky claims to be applying traffic management to none of their packages which is great news. However, this isn't guaranteed to be the case forever so it pays to be aware.

Sky traffic management policy

A VPN helps you to avoid traffic management by encrypting your data.

This means that Sky Broadband cannot see what you, or any other member of the VPN community are doing online and is therefore unable to discriminate against you for downloading or streaming during busy periods.

2. Unblock overseas streaming services

A lot of Sky Broadband customers will want to enjoy streaming sites like Netflix US, Peacock TV, HBO Go, Sling TV, and even Netflix Japan that are not available in the UK without a VPN.

Sky Broadband certainly isn't keen for you to use them and remember they are logging all of your online usage.

Not to mention Sky Shield, which will prevent you from accessing a whole range of sites and services. In fact, Sky Shield is one of the main reasons why you need a suitable VPN with easy-to-use apps and a true zero logs policy.

With a VPN like ExpressVPN, it is possible to hide your activity and unblock all your favourite online streaming services as you bypass censorship and Sky Shield, and reach Sky's network.

There are plenty of VPN deals but you need to make sure that you select only the best VPNs for Sky first, and keep in mind that cheaper services aren't going to cut it with the UK ISPs and Sky Shield.

3. Remain private

UK law requires all Internet Service Provider (ISPs) services, including Sky Broadband to keep logs of what their customers get up to online and make these available upon request.

This is because of Investigatory Powers Act and this legislation also gives dozens of organisations the right to access this information.

It is a gross invasion of your privacy and currently subject to various legal challenges.

Until these are resolved, the best way to stop your online data from being logged is to use a VPN which encrypts your data and redirects it through an external server to prevent your ISP from seeing the websites you are visiting.

VPN users can rely on advanced encryption protocols that come with the best VPN deals. These will allow you risk-free access to the internet, and still be able to offer high-speed servers.

The Best VPNs for Sky won't let them block websites, as long as you connect to any server located in the UK.

Summary

The best VPN for Sky Broadband customers is ExpressVPN, but we have also provided a list of alternatives if you want to try something different.

ExpressVPN tops our list because of its high quality security and privacy provisions, lightning fast speeds, great range of UK-based servers, and excellent apps.

It is a completely risk free VPN, and it is ideal for any device, including Smart TV, any mobile device, PC, gaming consoles, and more.

All Sky Broadband users should be using the best VPNs for Sky, and while there are lots out there, our professional opinion after extensive testing is that ExpressVPN is the best.

I can tell you that NordVPN works for about 10 minutes with Sky and then freezes. IP Vanish very similar. All you can really do is change to another provider.

    • Christopher Seward

      Hi Richard,

That doesn’t sound right at all. If the app is freezing then it’s more to do with the compatibility or an issue with the device you’re using it on.

A VPN should have no reason to freeze. Have you been able to test them on an alternative device?
