Sky Broadband is one of the most popular internet services in the UK but like every other ISP, a VPN is becoming a critical tool to secure your online privacy.

There are hundreds of reasons to use a VPN with your Sky Broadband package from protecting your online privacy all the way through to keeping your Kodi streaming habits secure.

Whatever your reasons for wanting or using a VPN the minefield of which VPN to get for Sky Broadband and how to use it coupled with a thousand other questions can be off-putting.

In this guide we’re going to look at how to use a VPN with Sky Broadband, how to choose the best for use with Sky Broadband and answer the many other questions you’re likely to have.

How to choose the best VPN for use with Sky Broadband

Choosing a VPN for Sky Broadband is relatively easy because the majority of VPN providers will be suitable.

However, one subtle difference between choosing a good VPN for Sky Broadband and choosing a bad VPN for Sky Broadband can make all the difference in your experience.

As online privacy has become big business these days it means there are now thousands of choices of VPN providers available.

Unfortunately, not all are as good as each other even though they all cost approximately the same. More surprisingly, some of the dollar (or pound) or two cheaper services can even be better than the more expensive ones.

There is just no reliable way to know before signing up if a VPN is good or not. Below we explore some of those that are.

What is the “best” VPN for Sky Broadband

The word “best” is very subjective when it comes to VPN services. The is certainly not one service that is far superior to other services when using with Sky Broadband. Any website that tells you otherwise is lying.

There is however a selection of most suitable (ergo best) VPN providers for use with Sky Broadband.

Another factor is your usage. If you require access points in many different countries but a service only offers servers in a few countries but otherwise offers an exceptional service, then for your use it is hardly “best”.

Through extensive testing we’ve found the following five providers to be some of the best for use with Sky Broadband.

  1. ExpressVPN – Get 3 months free
  2. IPVanish
  3. NordVPN
  4. CyberGhost VPN

If you have time to research then we strongly recommend you visit all five to see the countries they offer, their price and any other features you’re interested in. Also, check out reviews can for each.

  1. ExpressVPN Review
  2. IPVanish Review
  3. NordVPN Review
  4. CyberGhost VPN Review
  5. Review

If however you’re strapped for time then we highly recommend ExpressVPN. We found them to offer some of the best speeds, easiest to use apps and an overall good service. We even rated them our Editor’s Choice VPN provider in 2020 which is the highest award we hand out.

How to use a VPN with Sky Broadband

Once you’ve decided on a VPN provider and signed up you’ll need to download their app for your device.

Thankfully all 5 providers listed above and any other good VPN provider will offer apps and software for all major devices.

So if you want to connect on a mobile device such as a phone or tablet running Android or iOS or a computer or laptop running Windows or Mac then you’re covered.

ExpressVPN also takes this a step further and offer an app for Amazon devices such as the Fire TV and Fire TV Stick which will allow you to connect easily that is also suitable if you have Kodi installed on either device.

Simply download the correct app for your device. You can find apps on your app store or software for computers on the VPN provider website, usually under “Products” like ExpressVPN.

Once downloaded, install the app or software and you can connect to the VPN service easily.

What to do if your VPN is blocked on Sky Broadband

Sky Broadband don’t actively block VPN connections which is good news but that means if you’re struggling to connect then the issue is elsewhere.

Often system set-up such as firewalls or anti-virus can interfere with VPN services so the first port of call is to quickly switch them off and re-test the VPN. If it works then your firewall or anti-virus is the culprit and you’ll need to consult the documentation of your particular service on how to let VPN connections through.

One of the most common issues suffered by Sky Broadband connections when using a VPN is caused by Sky’s own filtering service called Sky Broadband Shield.

You can turn this off by visiting and switching the service to off.

You should then reconnect to your VPN service.

Sky Broadband is no different to any other ISP in the UK or worldwide so choosing a VPN is no more difficult.

Due to UK website restrictions, privacy breaches and stories of government snooping a VPN is now essential when using Sky Broadband regardless of your usage.

With most VPN services now allowing you to connect on up to 5 devices at the same time it means you can either protect your whole family at home or every device you own all with just one VPN account.

With good VPN services costing less than £5 per month it doesn’t make sense to not use one with your Sky Broadband service.

If you’re looking for a good VPN service we recommend ExpressVPN but there are plenty of others out there. A good resource to check is our Best VPN for Sky Broadband guide or if you want even more choice to compare then there are over 20 providers compared in our VPN Comparison Guide.

  1. No

Sky doesn’t actively block VPN connections, but Sky Broadband Shield does actively block them.

Which is functionally identical to Sky blocking VPN connections… along with a boatload of other stuff this nanny company is censoring.

    Don’t be an apologist.

  2. Stephen

I turned off the Sky Broadband Shield however the Express VPN add ust goes into a connect disconnect loop, was fine on my previous ISP

    • Christopher Seward

      Hi Stephen,

Try going into the Settings area and Protocol. Swap TCP and UDP, then try again. Failing that, try choosing a different protocol, eg; OpenVPN, Lightway and see if that makes a difference.

      Keep us posted!

  3. Hi, Christopher, I have Sky Broadband Shield switched off and always have, and yet, using IP Vanish, I still get blocked by Sky and cannot sign into my account when the VPN is activated. If I disconnect the VPN I can sign in, but that’s not the point. Any ideas? Hope you can help. Regards, Michael

What is it that you trying to ‘sign in’ to that you can without the VPN but can’t when connected to the VPN?

  4. Alan Spence

Followed your instructions closed VPN and deleted cookies, then switched off Sky Broadband Shield. Then switched VPN back on again. Still couldn’t access the football.

      Hi Alan,
