How to unblock Spotify and listen anywhere

Spotify on phone with earphones

Spotify is without question one of the best music streaming services around. However, your access may be limited.

In this article I am are going to show you how you can unblock Spotify. Allowing you to access all of its music from anywhere in the world or at work, school or other locations you might find it blocked.

There is probably no need to tell you what Spotify is – this music platform is one of the most popular ways to enjoy your favourite tunes. Unfortunately, due to censorship and geo-restrictions, Spotify is not available to everyone, everywhere.

However, this can easily be changed with the right tools, and I have an easy way to do it. If you are interested in learning how, keep reading, and you will find out.

What do you need to stream Spotify?

In order to stream Spotify from anywhere, you will need a way to bypass online censorship and geo-restrictions. The best and easiest way to do it is with a little app called a VPN.

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network and although it sounds technical – it isn’t.

Mainly it’s used for online privacy, security, and anonymity, as it allows you to hide your real location and appear to be from somewhere else. But for you, it’s a way of using Spotify regardless of where you are.

This is possible by merely connecting to a server in another country or one in your own country if Spotify is restricted at your school or work etc.

Don’t worry if that sounds complicated as the VPN app does this all for you.

There are a lot of VPN apps and you’ll need to pick one. In my testing, I found the best service for this job is ExpressVPN.

It’s super-easy to use, and you can use it on almost any device so you can listen to Spotify wherever you are.

Alternatively, NordVPN, CyberGhost and those listed in our VPN Comparison Guide are just as good.

How to use and stream Spotify freely?

The first step was learning what you need – the second step is learning how to use it.

It is effortless and quick, and all you have to do is follow these few steps:

  1. Choose a VPN, again I recommend ExpressVPN, but you are free to choose.
  2. Go to its website and sign up.
  3. Choose a subscription plan and enter the required payment details.
  4. Download their VPN app for the device/system you plan on listening to Spotify on.
  5. Install the VPN app, open it and then login with your account details.
  6. Press on the ‘Selected Location‘ button and then choose either your own country or another nearby country if Spotify isn’t available in your country.
  7. Press ‘Connect‘. Once the app has connected launch the Spotify app or website and enjoy listening.

How does the VPN work?

We mentioned briefly how a VPN allows you to hide your location by connecting to overseas servers, but this is only a fraction of its abilities.

VPN technology uses numerous security features, but it has three main ones. The first one includes security protocols, which create a tunnel around your internet traffic; it acts as a shield and hides what you’re doing from view.

The second one is encryption, which makes your data entirely unreadable for those who might spy on you.

Finally, there is a network of servers that lets you connect to foreign servers, and replace your IP Address with one of theirs. With an IP address giving away information such as your location – this is an easy way to change your online location in the eyes of the internet.

In a nutshell, a VPN disguises that you’re using Spotify, so no one knows you’re using it. If the service isn’t accessible in your country, then it tells Spotify you’re in a region where it is available.

What is Spotify?

You probably already know what Spotify is – the platform is famous, after all.

Just in case you’re new to Spotify, it’s is a music streaming platform, developed by the company Spotify AB, headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden.

The platform features music around the world, and it has been around ever since 2006.

It allows you to reach all of your favourite tunes quickly; create different playlists for different occasions, and more. It is basically a Netflix for music, which is why everyone should be able to access it.

The service is entirely legal and has a free streaming option and a premium service.

What devices does this work on?

A great thing about VPN is that you can use it on almost any device.

Spotify already has apps for mobile devices, as well as a web-based player. This means that you can listen to it from any device that has access to browsers, or from your Android/iOS device.

Since the VPNs we mentioned have browser extensions and mobile apps as well, you can use any of them to access Spotify from any device.

All you need to do is follow the steps I mentioned above, and you will have access to all the music you could ever want in no time.

Spotify is an excellent app – one that should be accessible across the world on any network.

Unfortunately, not everyone has access, and many people around the world will get the message that it is not available in their country or find it’s blocked on their local network, should they try to join it.

With a VPN such as ExpressVPN, you can bypass such blocks and stream your favourite songs for as long as you want.

Pick a VPN service, sign up, and get the app, then connect either to your own country or one nearby. That is all it takes to be able to enjoy Spotify from anywhere in the world.
