Ghana VPN

Ghana, a country on the west coast of Africa and one that using a VPN (Virtual Private Network) is becoming increasingly important for online privacy and censorship circumvention.

While Ghana itself does not overly censor Ghanaian internet access it is known that journalists do practise self-censorship and the government have been known to block Ghanaian internet coverage of events.

This started as far back as 2002 when reporting of tribal violence in the north of Ghana was censored online.

Ghana was one of the first African countries to get internet access and with over 16 million active internet users as of January 2021, the number of users looking for a VPN for Ghana are beginning to increase.

There are over 110,000 Ghanaians living in the UK with an estimated 20% of Ghana-born citizens living around the world in countries such as the United States, Australia, Canada and the Netherlands.

Top 5 VPNs for Ghana

Africa, in general, is very under-resourced when it comes to VPN servers so it is critical to look for a secure VPN provider with servers as close as possible for speed reasons.

In fact, users of popular social forum Reddit agree that “distance DOES impact your speeds as well, so closer is better”.

Below I’ll run through what makes ExpressVPN the best VPN option for Ghana and also why the other 4 are equally good choices when looking for a VPN for Ghana to unblock websites and give you more internet freedom.

1. ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN apps on multiple types of devices

Pros
  • Best in class for Ghana
  • Servers in South Africa & Algeria
  • Registered off-shore
  • Accepts many payment options
  • Super fast download speed
  • Excellent apps
  • 30-day money back guarantee
Cons
  • Paying monthly expensive

When it comes to VPN server locations ExpressVPN is one of the biggest providers which is great news for Ghana. Africa is massively under-resourced when it comes to VPN servers in African nations and so the choice for Ghana is limited.

However, ExpressVPN is one of the few providers that offer a South African VPN server and Kenyan that will be ideal for Ghanaian VPN usage. If you’re looking for access towards the North of Africa then Algeria and Egypt should serve your needs.

ExpressVPN is registered in the British Virgin Islands which is out of the reach of surveillance agencies, so you can rest assured your internet activity is well protected with your VPN subscription.

o protect your user data, ExpressVPN own their own servers, so you’ll always have a secure connection.

ExpressVPN offers servers in Portugal, Spain, Malta and the UK which will also be suitable for Ghanaian users. You can access websites and geo restricted content such as online TV from the likes of the BBC in the UK. Most of Europe is covered so you have further options there.

You’ll also be able to access multiple Netflix libraries from all over the world. Each Netflix library has different content available, and with ExpressVPN you’ll be able to access blocked content on the Netflix site.

ExpressVPN has some great security features such as a built in kill switch, IP address leak protection, DNS leak protection, and 256 bit encryption.

What makes ExpressVPN a great VPN provider for Ghana is again they have a wide range of payment options available which will make it easier to actually sign up for the service.

Many providers only accept Paypal which is fine if you live outside Ghana and are travelling there but if you live in Ghana then access to Paypal isn’t always possible.

As well as Paypal, ExpressVPN accepts the following payment methods, Credit Cards, Bitcoin, Web Money, Yandex Money, Alipay, Unionpay, UKash, GiroPay, iDeal, Sofort, Maestro, Carte Bleue, Interac Online, Mint, Fanapay & Onecard.

Out of all the VPN providers on this list, ExpressVPN is the best VPN for Ghana.

2. IPVanish

IPVanish website

Pros
  • Nearby servers in South Africa
  • Apps for most devices
  • Registered in the US
  • Good European coverage
  • Easy to use
Cons
  • Apps a little dated
  • Not great for streaming

IPVanish has VPN servers in South Africa which is the first major bonus for those looking to use a VPN in Ghana.

Speed is going to be the critical factor when choosing a VPN provider for use in Ghana and with South Africa available plus a host of European servers, it makes IPVanish one of my top choices.

With Ghana being well connected via undersea cables to Europe the servers provided by IPVanish in Portugal and Spain will also give some of the better speeds available when encrypting your internet connection in Ghana and if you want to access TV streaming services from the UK or other European locations then IPVanish covers this need too.

North Africa is covered with servers in Egypt with Malta another close location that could be useful for Ghanaians looking to increase their online encryption or virtually reside in another country.

My first choice server from IPVanish for use in Ghana would be South Africa but with Portugal or Spain coming in a close second.

IPVanish works relatively well with most streaming services, although not as well as some others. Streaming sites such as Netflix, Disney+, and many more work well on this Ghana VPN service.

If you’re lucky enough to have access to a Paypal account of a relative outside Ghana or you’re travelling to Ghana then Paypal is accepted at IPVanish but if not they also offer a bigger range of payment options than most other providers.

These include Credit/Debit Cards, Bitcoin, AliPay, CashU, POLi, SOFORT Banking, iDeal, Mister Cash, GiroPay, Boleto Bancario, DineroMail, Przelewy24, EPS, Elektronisches Lastschriftverfahren & PaySafeCard.

Ghanaians love mobiles and IPVanish have apps for both Android devices and iOS allowing you to be protected not only on a desktop or laptop but also on the move when using your mobile device.

For speed, ease of use, access across all systems and good connections for Ghana, this is what makes IPVanish one of my top choices for a VPN service in Ghana.

Want the best VPN for Ghana? Then you can’t go wrong with IPVanish, it should be on your to check list, you even get a 30 day money back guarantee.

3. HideMyAss

HideMyAss VPN

Pros
  • Lots of server locations
  • Easy to use apps
  • Apps for most devices
  • 30-day money back guarantee
Cons
  • Lots of virtual servers in use
  • Not the fastest

HideMyAss is possibly the most well-known VPN software in the world and for good reason. HideMyAss are the public champion of VPN services. While not as fast as the two providers above they do have one of the most extensive networks of VPN servers worldwide.

While HideMyAss don’t always have physical servers in the location they are supposed to be in they do have a wide range of African-based virtual servers giving the impression they are in that country. Unlike most other providers, they have a wide choice of African options.

Including Ghana VPN servers themselves (giving you a Ghana IP address), HideMyAss also have servers available in Benin, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, The Ivory Coast, Guinea-Bissau, Cameroon and Gabon.

These are the closest located VPN servers to Ghana, but they also have an extensive network across most of Africa. While they may not always be physical servers in that particular country they do allow you to assume a local identity of those nations.

If you need European, American or other connections HideMyAss also has a large worldwide network so you’ll find yourself covered for Ghana VPN use regardless of where you want to appear and with VPN encryption you’ll be sure to have a protected internet connection while travelling or living in Ghana.

While HideMyAss isn’t as fast overall as IPVanish and ExpressVPN it does have a greater option of more local connection points for use in Ghana giving you access to an Ghanaian IP address with a Ghana VPN server.

HideMyAss accept Paypal, Credit / Debit Cards and the following payment options, cashU, Bitcoin and Wire Transfer. HideMyAss also accept WebMoney which may make paying from Ghana directly easier.

HMA is one of the best VPN providers, specifically if you’re after a VPN connection with a Ghana IP address.

4. NordVPN

NordVPN website

Pros
  • Easy to use apps
  • Good download speeds
  • Reliable connections
  • 30-day money back guarantee
Cons
  • Not much local coverage
  • Not the fastest

NordVPN is a great VPN service to use in Ghana.

They have just under 5,300 high-speed servers located globally that will allow you to bypass any government censorship that’s in place. 50+ are located in nearby South Africa.

Each server offers excellent connection speeds that will help you access online streaming platforms from all over the world, without any problems.

NordVPN have a great selection of VPN apps available that cover all of the most popular devices such as Android, iOS devices, Windows, MacOS, and many more. The apps themselves are easy to use and look great.

While NordVPN is one of the best VPNs for Ghana, they fall slightly short on the number of simultaneous connections they offer, which is 6. This isn’t too low of a number, but with the likes of IPVanish offering unlimited simultaneous connections, it would be nice to see NordVPN follow suit.

But, if you’re looking for a VPN in Ghana then NordVPN is one of the best VPN providers around and will encrypt your internet traffic while unblocking websites. They even offer a 30 day money back guarantee to eliminate any risk for their VPN users.

5. CyberGhost VPN

Cyberghost Website

Pros
  • Apps for most devices
  • 7 concurrent connections
  • Easy to use
  • 45-day money back guarantee
Cons
  • Not the fastest
  • Paying monthly expensive

This provider has one of the largest collections of servers going, a staggering 7,400+ VPN servers will be available to you if you subscribe to CyberGhost.

They have specialised servers for online streaming, so you’ll be able to access content from Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, and more. This will enable you to unblock geo restricted content with ease.

CyberGhost offers a huge 45-day money-back guarantee which is the longest out of all the VPNs on this list. They also have outstanding live chat support to help with any of your queries.

However, even though CyberGhost is a great VPN for Ghana they do have a few pitfalls. They offer 7 concurrent connections which is great, but once you hit that limit, you’ll need to de-register one of the connected devices. This is more of an annoyance and feels unnecessary.

One other problem I’ve found is that the monthly cost is slightly expensive when compared to other VPNs. This can be fixed by purchasing a longer-term package from them.

Overall, if you’re looking for the best VPN for Ghana, then CyberGhost VPN might just be the one for you.

What is the best free VPN for Ghana?

Free VPNs are never a good idea, this is due to several factors. One of the most important is that they actually do the opposite of what a VPN should do, which protects your information.

A lot of free VPN services will actively mine your information and sell it to the highest bidder. Sometimes this could be marketers, hackers, and even government agencies.

This is not OK.

Another downside is that the server connections are extremely unreliable and are notoriously slow. This will render your connection useless for streaming online video. You’ll also find that you’ll get bombarded by advertisements, which is rather annoying.

However, if you must use a free VPN service then you should check out the three mentioned below. Each one has been tested by myself. They aren’t perfect but better than no VPN.

1. PrivadoVPN

PrivadoVPN is a premium VPN service that offers a free version of their VPN.

While it claims to be a zero log VPN provider and offers good speeds, the free version does have some limitations when it comes to features.

You’ll be limited to only 12 server locations instead of having access to hundreds, and you’ll only be able to connect 1 device at a time to the free service. The VPN won’t be great for streaming video as you’re limited to only 10GB of free data each month.

If you want a VPN in Ghana and only need it for basic tasks like checking emails and general browsing of the internet, it will do a limited job.

2. ProtonVPN

ProtonVPN offers you the option of a free service, but like with PrivadoVPN, it comes with some limitations.

You’ll have huge restrictions on what countries you can connect to with only 3 being available.

They give you the ability to connect 1 device at a time to the service and restrict your connection speed to “medium” which isn’t great if you want to download or stream videos.

It’s not the greatest VPN in Ghana, but it’s not the worst I’ve come across either. It will do the job for the time being, but you’re better off with a premium service like ExpressVPN.

3. Windscribe

Windscribe offers a free Ghana VPN service that is limited to 1 server, you can pay an additional $1 per server if you require access to another region for example.

It’s worth mentioning that Windscribe did have a security breach recently when two of its servers went offline.

It’s only when Windscribe contacted the server hosts that they found out both servers had been seized by the authorities. What’s more worrying is that neither server was encrypted.

Overall, I’d only use these free VPNs if you had no other option. You’re better off using a paid VPN that provides unlimited bandwidth and has military grade encryption like the top 5 VPNs in my list above.

Summary

So there you have the Top 5 VPNs for Ghana. They are all suitable either if you live in Ghana or you’re travelling there for a period of time.

If you live in Ghana then the most difficult aspect of using a VPN service will be paying for it. If you’re lucky enough to have access to Paypal through a friend or family then your choice is greatly increased.

However, if you don’t have Paypal then there are plenty of other options such as Credit or Debit card payment.

Failing that it’s possible to buy either Bitcoin, Payza, Skrill or WebMoney from dealers in Ghana. Once such based in Accra is Ecurrency4u but a quick search of Google will produce more results.

Once you’ve signed up to one of the best VPN providers above such as ExpressVPN you’ll not only have safe, encrypted and almost uncensored access to the internet in Ghana, you’ll also be able to access services outside from the US, UK and elsewhere by masking your IP Address.

Not even your Internet Service Provider (ISP) will know what you’re doing on the world wide web, your internet privacy and online freedom is in good hands.
