Top 5 Best VPN for Windows 2017

Windows Keyboard

Windows is one of the most popular operating systems in the world and protecting your privacy on it should be a top priority. In this article I’m taking a look at 5 of the Best VPN services for Windows systems.

Whether you have a desktop, a laptop, a surface pro, a tablet or any other device that can run Windows in all its glory then protecting your privacy is relatively easy.

A simple VPN service with Windows software will allow you to get connected and protected within seconds and with very minimal fuss and no technical know-how.

However, one huge caveat is not all VPN services are made the same and while they all cost approximately the same the level of service you get and the quality of the Windows software can vary dramatically.

I’ve tested more services than you could imagine to bring you the best for 2017 and below I take a little look at the Top 5’s features to help you make a purchasing decision.

1. IPVanish

IPVanish Nov 16 Website

IPVanish is without a doubt my favourite VPN service for Windows and without question the Best VPN for Windows.

The IPVanish Windows software has recently been redesigned which makes connection even easier than before. You can simply select a country and hit connect and need to do nothing more.

If you want a little more customisation then you can quickly choose a city and even a specific server if you want all from the main screen and then click connect to get yourself protected.

There are of course other connection options such as a map, a list and a filter view allowing you to search for the most suitable location. This is all located nice and tidy away from the main screen but easily accessible using the side menu.

Once connected you can see a detailed download and upload speed graph and other information such as your new IP address, the protocol used and more. Connection and disconnection can be made from any screen on the software just by hitting the On and Off button and once you’re happy you can minimise it to the notification area.

IPVanish has VPN servers in more than 60 countries with over 700 servers and access to more than 40,000 shared IP Addresses. Packages start from as little as $6.49 (approximately £5.18 at current rates) per month.

2. ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN website Jan 17

ExpressVPN is my number two provider for Windows and one of the Best VPNs for Windows.

Like IPVanish they keep their Windows client regularly updated and keep on improving it for ease of use and adding additional features.

The ExpressVPN Windows software is a lot more minimal than the IPVanish one and the main screen shows just a connection button and options to select other server locations and more settings.

If you want to get connected quickly without being bogged down with settings, graphs and other niceties then you’ll definitely love the ExpressVPN application.

Further options are available behind the scenes such as protocol selection, options to boot the software on launch of Windows and a host of others. You can also change server location easily.

The ExpressVPN software isn’t quite as visually appealing or as well thought out as the latest from IPVanish but it does come a very close second and getting connected will be easy enough even if you’re a VPN novice.

ExpressVPN has servers in 87 different countries and more than 136 cities. They offer a 30-day money back guarantee and allow you to connect on 3 different devices at the same time.

Prices start at $8.32 per month which is approximately £6.65. You can visit their website by clicking the button below.

3. NordVPN

NordVPN Website Jan 17

NordVPN didn’t feature last year in our Best VPN for Windows guide but consistent improvements have seen their service go from average to one of the best.

The Windows software has been recently completely redesigned and is now attractive and intuitive allowing you to get connected to your server of choice with very little effort.

After entering your login details all you need to do is click On and unless you want to select a specific service then you’ll be connected to the most suitable and be protected straight away. It doesn’t get much easier than that.

NordVPN makes it easy to connect to P2P optimised servers, contact their live help and use features like their kill-switch all easily and accessible from within the Windows software.

If you want to select a certain country or location then the interactive map makes it simple to visually see where you want to connect.

NordVPN comes with a 30-day money back guarantee, allows P2P across their network and stores no logs.

Prices start from $5.75 per month which is approximately £4.59 and you can read our NordVPN Review 2017 or visit their website directly by clicking the link below.

4. Overplay

Overplay Website Nov 16

Overplay like many of the other providers listed in this Best VPN for Windows 2017 guide have recently redesigned their Windows software making it not only easier to connect and protect yourself but more clear how to navigate the software.

One thing to note is the Overplay software only allows you to connect via OpenVPN and the other protocols aren’t available like other providers so if you want access to PPTP and L2TP it’s best to opt for IPVanish.

If OpenVPN is enough for you (and why not, it’s the most secure VPN protocol) then you’ll be rewarded with the ability to select 256-bit, 128-bit or no encryption. I especially like the no encryption option which allows you to access geo-blocked content with the fastest possible speeds and isn’t available from many other providers.

Selecting a server can be done from the main screen and if you’re after a few more advanced options then they’re tucked away neatly in the settings area.

Overplay have VPN servers in 50 different countries in more than 70 different locations and along with IPVanish are one of the fastest VPN services I’ve tested.

Prices start from $8.33 per month which is approximately £6.65. Visit their website by clicking the button below.

5. VPN.ac
VPN.ac Website Jan 17

VPN.ac wrap up my selection of Best VPN for Windows 2017 and along with the other providers they’re a very good choice if you’re a Windows user.

In terms of size VPN.ac are a smaller provider so you’ll need to check if their 20 or so server locations are suitable for your needs.

The Windows software from VPN.ac is more functional than attractive but like the other software options connection is quick and painless.

Simply select a server from their drop down list and hit connect.

VPN.ac Windows software

One of the features I like most about the VPN.ac Windows software is the encryption options. If you know a little bit about VPNs and encryption then you can select from PPTP, L2TP, OpenVPN 128-bit, OpenVPN 256-bit, OpenVPN ECC and OpenVPN XOR.

These options aren’t available from any of the other providers and even if you aren’t technically knowledgeable you can still just select their standard option and connect.

Summary: Best VPN for Windows 2017

With the range of choice available these days and nearly every VPN provider worth their salt offering Windows software it can be really difficult knowing which provider to choose.

I tested many different providers in the name of research for this guide and the above 5 are my top picks as Best VPN for Windows.

My recommended provider is IPVanish because their software is incredibly easy to use, their service better than most and their price competitive with what else is available on the market.

Windows VPN software can range from extremely good to extremely bad and if you’re going to make use of the VPN service for some time then you want to ensure that the software serves the purposes you need it for.

If you don’t have time to search about then sign up to IPVanish as you can’t go wrong but if you have a little more time to do your own research then it’s worth visiting all 5 providers above and taking a look at what else their services offer as even though all their Windows software is good you may find additional features from the overall VPN service that are more suited to your needs.

Whichever provider you choose to sign up to you’ll get a good service and quality Windows software that will keep your privacy protected and allow you to access geo-blocked content throughout 2017.
