Find the Best VPN for 2016

The past few years have led to a huge increase in the need to protect your privacy. From whistle-blower leaks to large corporation hacks the need to increase your personal online security has never been greater.

In 2015 I kept a close eye on some of the leading VPN providers and watched their developments, tested the quality of their services, compared their prices and tested their speeds.

The good news is although there are some bad VPN providers out there, there are also plenty of good VPN providers. The amount of service you get for your money is increasing yearly and 2015 was no exception, as VPN providers grow and offer more servers and features their prices remain just as cheap as they ever were and in some cases actually get lower.

So if you’re wondering what the Top 5 VPN Services for 2016 are then let’s take a look at the features of these following 5 providers and why that makes them the best options for VPN usage throughout 2016.

1. IPVanish

IPVanish Small Logo

Pros

  •  Huge number of server locations.
  •  One of the fastest VPN providers.
  •  Competitive annual package prices.

 Cons

  •  Not many.

IPVanish is basically the all singing all dancing VPN provider. Throughout 2015 I tested their service regularly and for various purposes and can whole-heartedly say they provided the best VPN experience bar none.

In my monthly VPN speed tests IPVanish regularly features top and if not top then within the first 3 positions. While some providers fluctuated up and down on a month to month basis, IPVanish was one of the few that was consistent.

IPVanish now offers servers in over 60 different countries worldwide with over 418 individual servers in many different cities within those 60 countries.

Software and apps are available for Windows, Mac, Android and iOS devices meaning connection is extremely easy on your computer, tablet or phone. Their software solutions make connecting to any server and protecting your privacy easy enough meaning even the most novice user won’t struggle.

At US$10 (approx £6.70) per month, their monthly package is competitively priced with other providers who offer a similar service. However, a large saving can be made when taking an annual account that brings the price down to just US$6.49 (approx £4.35) per month making them one of the cheapest providers available and for the quality of service the price really can’t be beaten.

My Number 1 VPN choice for 2016.

2. ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN Small Logo

 Pros

  •  One of the largest amount of servers.
  •  30 Day money back guarantee.
  •  Software and apps for major devices.

 Cons

  •  A little expensive.
  •  Not as fast as IPVanish.

My number two choice if IPVanish doesn’t tick your boxes is ExpressVPN.

In terms of country locations for servers, ExpressVPN is one of the largest with servers in over 78 countries. With over 1000 servers in total, it makes ExpressVPN hard to beat in terms of infrastructure size.

A full software suite is available which like IPVanish covers PC, Mac, Android and iOS so all your devices are covered and you can easily protect your privacy on both your desktop and mobile devices. ExpressVPN allows 2 devices to be in use at the same time.

One area that lets ExpressVPN down is they’re a little more expensive than IPVanish and some of the other providers available. At US$12.95 (approx £8.68) per month, I do find them a little pricey. Taking an annual package brings the price down considerably to US$8.32 (approx £5.58) per month but again it’s still a little on the expensive side.

ExpressVPN offer good download speeds but they’re not breaking any barriers and if you’re looking to achieve top speeds then IPVanish is still the better option.

The biggest selling point of ExpressVPN is they offer a massive 30-day money back guarantee which isn’t widespread throughout the VPN industry so if you don’t mind the expensive prices and aren’t doing speed intensive tasks then you really can try before you buy, well, for a whole 30 days at least.

3. LiquidVPN

LiquidVPN Small Logo

 Pros

  •  One of the fastest providers.
  •  Quite cheap.

 Cons

  •  Lacking an iOS app.
  •  Limited server selection.

LiquidVPN is my favourite small VPN provider. As with IPVanish, LiquidVPN is one of the fastest providers and in months where IPVanish didn’t top the table you can be sure LiquidVPN would be in the number one spot for speed alone.

Being a smaller provider comes with some pitfalls though and that falls to the reach of their servers in country numbers. LiquidVPN currently only have servers in 9 countries which will make them unsuitable for users in some regions. The US and Europe are well covered but with only 1 server in Asia and none in Australia, South America or Africa it leaves large portions of users just too far to make it a worthwhile service.

If you live in one of the areas covered then you can be sure of good speeds and with some of the lowest prices available they also make an attractive option price-wise. LiquidVPN cost just US$7 (approx £4.69) per month so if you’re only after a month or two of service then they could make an ideal solution. Sign up for 12 months and the price is just US$4.75 (approx £3.18) per month.

LiquidVPN has custom software solutions for Windows and Mac and also an Android client. Unfortunately iOS isn’t currently supported so if you’re after protecting your iPad or iPhone you’ll have to manually set it up which will be difficult for a novice.

If you can live with a limited server selection and no iOS app then LiquidVPN are worth a look, however, if you want more service for a similar price then IPVanish will have you covered.

4. VPN.ac

VPN.ac Small Logo

 Pros

  •  Low priced.
  •  Very privacy conscious.

 Cons

  •  No iOS app.
  •  Fewer server locations than others.

VPN.ac are one of the most privacy conscious VPN providers I’ve seen. No glitz and glamour here, VPN.ac will appeal to the expert and those with a keen interest in security and privacy matters.

That is not to say the service isn’t easy to use as VPN.ac offer Windows, Mac and Android software. Again iOS isn’t officially supported so if you want to protect your privacy on an iPad or iPhone it may be best to look at IPVanish or ExpressVPN.

VPN.ac are again on the smaller side in terms of countries covered but with 15 countries available the service is suitable for North America, Europe and Asia with a server also covering Australia.

As with LiquidVPN, VPN.ac are one of the cheaper providers. While their monthly package is similarly priced to most other providers at US$9.00 (approx £6.03) per month bigger savings can be made on their annual package that works out at just US$4.83 (£3.24) per month.

VPN.ac offer decent speeds and again if you can live without an iOS app or a huge selection of servers then they’re worth taking a look at.

5. HideMyAss

Hidemyass Small Logo

 Pros

  •  Very well known.

 Cons

  •  Speeds not the best.
  •  Unattractive windows software.

HideMyAss are probably one of the most well known and liked VPN providers. Millions of customers use their services daily and with a buyout by leading anti-virus firm AVG in 2015 they have a large corporation behind them.

If you’re after country locations then HideMyAss are the daddy of all providers. With connection points available in over 221 countries they can’t be beaten. However if you’re concerned about your privacy you should be aware HideMyAss provide virtual servers. This means that although you can appear in countries like Cuba and North Korea the actual servers aren’t in those countries but in nearby ones.

HideMyAss cover the full range of devices with software for Windows, Mac and even a Linux solution. They also have apps for both Android and iOS keeping your mobile browsing private.

Unfortunately when testing HideMyAss I found them to be one of the slowest providers. If you’re just doing everyday browsing then they’ll make a good choice but if you want to stream video or download then you’ll be pretty disappointed with the speeds.

With prices similar to those of others mentioned earlier but the service of lesser quality, it would be wise to opt for a provider like IPVanish or ExpressVPN and get more for your money. If you want to check out the offering from HideMyAss, follow the link below.
