NordVPN has long been one of the most established and highly regarded VPNs on the market.
In recent years, significant investment in their VPN infrastructure has also made them one of the very best VPNs around too. But until recently, a VPN was the only cyber-security solution they had on offer.
But now, all that has changed with the launch of not one but two new cyber-security products; NordLocker and NordPass
What is NordLocker?
NordLocker, which was first announced back in May, is their own file encryption service. It is expected to be launched later this summer as an app for both Windows and MacOS devices.
The app will apply end-to-end encryption to any files you have stored either on your device or in the cloud. It will help to ensure that these files and the data they contain can never fall into the wrong hands.
The new app will use Advanced Encryption Standard (AES-256) and 4096-bit RSA to ensure military-grade file security is available to all. It will also allow users to manage permissions meaning that you can share files securely too.
NordVPN have been at pains to stress that they have designed this product with a full spectrum of users in mind.
They state that it is an ideal solution for work-related file storage and can help keep sensitive corporate data safe from cyber-criminals and any personnel leaks. They also believe it is perfect for security confidential information on a sensitive forthcoming project.
However, they have also designed NordLocker to be ideal for individual users too. As they state in their blog post launching the product, “Think of all the personal files you’d rather keep for your eyes only: photos, videos, notes, amateur poetry, secret music collection,” the list goes on.
If you throw in personal data, financial information, and other information, there is a compelling case for using NordLocker to keep all of your data safe and secure.
Of course, NordVPN is not the first company to launch this type of file encryption tool. But products like this require users to trust the company tasked with encrypting their data.
NordVPN already has a terrific track record from its years running a VPN and they also boast a trustworthy zero-knowledge encryption process meaning they will never have access to the content of your files.
Even better, NordLocker can be used with every cloud storage provider meaning you don’t have to move your files to another provider in order to secure them.
What is NordPass?
The other new product coming soon from NordVPN is NordPass, their all-new password management tool.
Password Managers are tools which you can use to keep passwords secure and to help you to remember the many passwords we all need every day on the internet.
Given that the average person has dozens of passwords and it is widely recommended to use complex passwords including capital letters, small letters, numbers, and symbols, it is almost impossible to remember them all.
A Password Manager does the job for you keeping all your passwords encrypted and stored and leaving you only needing to remember a single password to access all of them.
There are lots of Password Managers out there that offer this service, but the new NordPass looks likely to shake up the market.
NordPass uses Advanced Encryption Standard (AES-256-GCM) encryption with Argon2 for key derivation, which NordVPN claims is virtually unbreakable. They are right.
They have also put their zero-knowledge encryption process to work here too meaning that NordVPN will never be able to access your passwords themselves. This is not the case with some other password managers and is a great innovation.
NordPass can even generate secure passwords for you which is not a new feature but nonetheless one that most users find both helpful and welcome.
The NordVPN Security Suite
The announcement of the new NordPass Password Manager means that there will now be a suite of security tools available from NordVPN.
“We can secure your connections with NordVPN and we can secure your files with NordLocker, but you still need a strong password for both. Passwords are the front line for your online account security. That’s why we’re introducing NordPass,” explained Marty P. Kamden, the boss of NordVPN.
What is more, this looks likely to be just the beginning. Kamden has already pledged that there will be more features added to NordPass as the product develops. That is also likely to be the case for NordLocker too.
While NordLocker is likely to hit the shelves in beta format this summer, NordPass will not arrive until the Autumn. But if you want to sign up now for early access you can do so at www.nordlocker.com and www.nordpass.com.
Here at VPNCompare.co.uk, we will of course reserve judgement on both these products until we have had time to test them for ourselves. But on the basis of how good NordVPN is and the sales patter, we are really looking forward to putting both through their paces.
