You wait ages for a premium VPN to add threat protection to its extensive list of features, and then two come along at once.
Hot on the heels of IPVanish, which, as we reported yesterday, has added Threat Protection to its Android and Amazon Fire TV apps, NordVPN has decided to join the party and add a Threat Protection feature of its own.
NordVPN’s Threat Protection for Windows users
The new Threat Protection feature that NordVPN is adding is to their Windows VPN app and is designed to help protect users from cyber threats that can emerge from vulnerable software on the Windows platform.
The tool works by automatically checking all of the apps on your Windows device for any security flaws that could be exploited by hackers and other cyber criminals.
It does this by comparing the apps present on a device to an extensive database of apps and versions of apps, along with the vulnerabilities that are known in each.
This database is growing all the time, but at the time of use, it contains more than 150 million applications, around 100,000 of which contain known vulnerabilities.
What to do if a vulnerable app is detected
If it detects a version of an app on your device that contains a known vulnerability, it sends you an alert informing you of the fact so that you can take action to remove or update the app to a safer version as appropriate.
If there is not a safer version of the app available, the advice from NordVPN is that you would probably be best to delete the app.
That is sound advice and something we would strongly concur with here at VPNCompare.
Commenting on the new feature, Vykintas Maknickas, Head of Product Strategy at NordVPN explained that “The vulnerability detection feature automatically checks the applications for known security flaws that hackers may exploit to gain unauthorized access to device and sensitive information.”
“If vulnerability detection identifies an open-to-attack app on a computer, it immediately send user a notification so he can take action to protect data and device,” he continued.
How to use NordVPN’s new Windows Threat Protection feature
So, if you are using NordVPN on a Windows device, you can benefit from NordVPN’s Windows threat protection today.
The feature runs quietly in the background of NordVPN and checks everything daily. With the database being updated regularly, you should get word of any vulnerabilities as soon as possible, giving you time to act fast to secure your system.
NordVPN is already one of the most feature-heavy VPNs on the market. And this latest feature is another addition to their excellent all-around service.
