Netflix, regardless of your geographical location, has a great collection of TV shows, but it’s hard to deny that some countries have a much better movie selection than others. While this might seem unfair, there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Netflix lets you use your account in any country where the service is active. The best part about this is the fact that each region has a different selection of streaming titles.
Netflix catalogue expanded with a VPN
Netflix, Netflix, everywhere!
Currently, Netflix is available in over 20 countries – spanning over 16 regions. These include the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Germany, France, Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland, Ireland, Austria, Luxembourg, Belgium, Latin America and the vast majority of the Nordic countries.
Due to complicated licensing agreements, some regions have a much weaker selection than others, which provides an uneven distribution of popular and more desired titles.
While there is some overlap in the film and TV show selection over these regions, much of the catalogue is unique. For example, let’s say I’m streaming from London, England, and I am in the mood to watch an episode or two of How I Met Your Mother.
After searching the Netflix selection in my region I quickly come to a realization that it’s not available to stream. Not the type to give up easily, I perform a quick Google search to find that the sitcom is available to stream in Canada.
Now, one way I can get access to the Canadian library is by booking a flight to Toronto, and setting up my laptop in the airport hotel. Or… I could choose to opt for the solution that doesn’t involve me moving from my couch. You can do the same – with the help of a VPN.
Let’s take a look.
How to get more Netflix movies for the same price
Getting access to any (and all) regions of Netflix from the comfort of your home is not difficult. All you need to do is find yourself a VPN service that has servers in the Netflix regions that you’re interested in. There are many providers out there that do just that, and many are completely free.
If you’re unsure about what VPN provider to choose, you will be safe with picking IPVanish, ExpressVPN or Hola to expand your Netflix selection. All three of the VPN providers mentioned have one thing in common – servers in every Netflix region. This makes it very easy for you to quickly (and virtually) switch your geographical location with a simple click.

Although you’re not going to travel much when using this method of accessing the complete Netflix library, you will save yourself tons and tons of cash. The only reason this is possible is due to Netflix’s lenient policy on the matter.
Hollywood, on the other hand, isn’t too happy with the fact that many users are accessing Netflix content with the help of VPNs, going as far as labeling these users as “VPN pirates”. Netflix CEO, Reed Hastings, stepped in to defend the user base by saying that these so-called VPN pirates are willing to pay, they just can’t get what they want through their local Netflix.
The basic solution is for Netflix to get global and have its content be the same all around the world so there’s no incentive to [use a VPN]. Then we can work on the more important part which is piracy.
It’s great to see Hastings stand behind Netflix users on this subject, and while the availability issue is completely fixable, it’s questionable whether Hollywood is ready to switch to global licensing deals just yet.
That being said if you plan on using a VPN service to continue to enjoy a wider selection of films you’re probably safe to do so – at least for now.
