IPVanish and PIA are two of the biggest VPN providers in the industry and both get positive reviews.

In our own testing IPVanish scored our highest ever rating of 4.6 out of 5 with PrivateInternetAccess receiving a healthy 4.0 out of 5.

On the surface they’re both two very good providers but a large price difference can make choosing between the two a difficult decision.

While one costs less the other offers more.

If you can’t decide between IPVanish and PIA we’ve broken them down into easy to digest categories to find out once and for all who offers the better service and help you make a buying decision.

IPVanish was established in 2012 and has fast become one of the industries leading VPN providers.

They’ve expanded rapidly in recent years with plenty of global locations to keep your privacy protected and allow you to access geo-restricted content.

I’ve been impressed that they’re still able to access services like BBC iPlayer and Sky Go when other providers have been blocked from doing so.

With great reports about their use with Kodi and other services they’re definitely an all rounder suitable for many different purposes.

Some of their standout features are:

  • No traffic or connection logs kept.
  • Over 60 global VPN server locations.
  • More than 40,000 IP Addresses available.
  • Shared IP Addresses in operation.
  • P2P and Torrent traffic use allowed.
  • 5 simultaneous connections allowed.
  • 7-day money back guarantee.

There aren’t too many negatives to the service but one we found is:

  • No live help

VPNCompare Overall Rating: 4.6 / 5

PrivateInternetAccess better known as PIA are one of the largest VPN providers in the world, with more than 2 million customers claimed they certainly must be doing something right.

It’s no secret that price alone plays a large factor in the success of PIA and while they do offer a very good and robust VPN service the ultra low price when taking an annual package is certainly the main draw for most.

Even though the service has a low price though, is the service any good? In our recent review we found them to offer a good service but when pitted against a more expensive and more feature rich service, which comes out best? We’ll find out.

A few of the perks of the PIA service are:

  • Super cheap yearly price.
  • 7-day money back guarantee.
  • Supports many privacy initiatives.
  • Software and apps for all major devices.
  • Can pay with gift cards.
  • No traffic logs.
  • Bitcoin accepted.

A few of the negatives are:

  • Not too many countries covered.
  • Not the fastest speeds.

IPVanish vs PIA Comparison

  1. Price

Price is something all of us consider, whether we’re buying an expensive item like a car or just a monthly subscription to a VPN service.

IPVanish and PIA are at two opposite ends of the scale when it comes to price with PIA being considerably cheaper on a monthly, 3/6 month and 12 month basis.

A one month package will cost you $6.95 from PIA whereas it will cost $10.00 from IPVanish.

A 6 month package will set you back $5.99 per month with PIA and the nearest 3 month package from IPVanish will cost $8.99 per month.

Where you really start to see a difference is the 12 month package. PIA costs just $3.33 per month with IPVanish coming in at $6.49 per month.

Without a doubt on price alone, PIA is the clear winner.

Winner: PIA

  1. Security & Privacy

PIA and IPVanish offer access to both PPTP, L2TP and OpenVPN protocols.

PIA has a wealth of encryption options for OpenVPN and users are able to select between them. The top encryption level is AES-256 with a 4096-bit RSA key.

IPVanish also offers AES-256 bit encryption but their RSA handshaking key is just 2048-bit and while still sufficient PIA just pips them to the post in this category.

The encryption across both services is high and very similar but for the fact of the additional options PIA takes the winning spot in this area.

Winner: PIA

  1. Server Locations

Server locations are critical to protecting your privacy no matter where you are in the world and allowing you to access geo-restricted content.

As most VPN providers cost approximately the same, having access to more server locations is always a benefit.

IPVanish currently has VPN servers in over 60 countries with some countries having servers in multiple cities.

PIA has VPN servers in just 25 countries and although they cover most major locations they’re seriously lacking in comparison to IPVanish.

In terms of servers, IPVanish is the obvious winner.

Winner: IPVanish

  1. Device Compatibility

Both PIA and IPVanish have software for Windows and Mac.

They also have apps for mobile and tablet devices running Android or iOS.

The IPVanish software and apps have been recently updated and although they were easy and user-friendly in the past they have now been improved dramatically.

While PIA also has software and apps they’re a little dated looking in comparison.

Choosing a winner in this category is easy. The IPVanish software is so much better designed and if you’re a new user the ease of use will be appreciated.

Winner: IPVanish

  1. Customer Support

Both IPVanish and PIA have limited support methods.

While they both offer support via Support Ticket they don’t have any other means of contact.

There is no live help offered by either provider so if you have an issue or want to get in touch then you’ll need to open a Support Ticket.

There is nothing wrong with this and answers from both providers are fast and helpful.

For this reason alone it’s impossible to select between the two and for customer support we have a draw.

Winner: Draw

Our Verdict: IPVanish

In the five categories above the two providers took half the points each leading to an overall draw, but there can only be one winner.

Although both providers scored highly in their respective categories outside of the five covered areas IPVanish are ever so slightly the better provider.

While they cost slightly more you get so much more service and one of the most critical areas that wasn’t covered above is speed.

In our testing and reviews for 2017, IPVanish was considerably faster, they also offer a more fully-fledged VPN service and while there is nothing inherently wrong with PIA, you really do get what you pay for.

If you’re really strapped for cash then PIA makes a good choice but for everything else, I would recommend IPVanish every time.
