Athletics Runner

In this guide we’re going to show you the easiest and quickest way to watch the IAAF Athletics World Championships abroad.

So if you’re outside the UK but want to watch all the Athletics events we’ve got you covered.

The IAAF Athletics World Championships taking place in London are one of the biggest, if not the biggest athletics events of this year. It’s also a good opportunity to see some of your favourite stars and see how they’re performing after last years Rio Olympics.

Depending what country you’re in you may find that the athletics are not being shown or there are only a few events being broadcast.

All you’ll need is a service called a VPN and you’ll be able to watch the entire event from any country in the world. Find out more below as we explain.

How to watch the Athletics World Championships abroad

The entire Athletics World Championships are being shown live online by the BBC on BBC iPlayer.

If you try to watch when you’re outside the UK you’ll see a block message similar to the one below:

BBC iPlayer blocked July 17

To unblock this you’ll need to sign up for a service called a VPN. A VPN allows you to change your online location and will cost between £3 – £6 per month so a 1-month account will be enough to watch the entire athletics event.

Just follow the steps below where we show you where you can get a VPN and how to use it to watch the Athletics World Championships abroad.

Watch the Athletics World Championships abroad Step-by-Step:

  1. Visit the VPN provider IPVanish.
  2. Click Start Now and sign-up.
  3. Download their app from your app store or software from the Apps area of their website.
  4. Install the app or software, run it and then login when required.
  5. Select United Kingdom.
  6. Press Connect.

It takes roughly 15 seconds for the IPVanish app or software to connect.

Once it has connected all you need to do is head over to the BBC iPlayer website and instead of being blocked you’ll be able to watch from any country in the world.

The events are being shown on BBC 1 and BBC 2 and you’ll be able to switch between both to watch live and catch-up events.

If you get stuck take a look at the example images below that shows you how to connect on both the IPVanish app and software.

Android / iOS:

IPVanish Android UK

Windows / Mac:

IPVanish UK Server

Windows software.

You may need to select specific locations as some locations may not work. For example, instead of Best City, select Manchester and instead of Best Server select man-c05.

Alternative VPN services

We recommend IPVanish to watch the Athletics World Championships because we found them to be the fastest provider which reduces the chances of buffering especially if you’re far from the UK.

There are however other VPN services that will also be suitable to watch the athletics abroad. If you’ve got time to shop about then three other VPN providers we recommend are:

They work in exactly the same way as IPVanish only the layout of their apps and software will be different. All you need to do is connect to their United Kingdom server and then visit the BBC iPlayer website.
