How to watch Strictly Come Dancing Final 2016 abroad

Strictly Come Dancing abroad

Everyone loves Strictly Come Dancing and 2016 has been no exception when it comes to highs and lows.

The final is now upon us and will be shown live on BBC on Saturday 17th December 2016 at 18:40.

If you’re in the UK you can simply watch live on BBC or use the online service BBC iPlayer but if you’re outside the UK then you’ll be left disappointed because it isn’t possible to access BBC iPlayer directly.

The good news is there is a really easy way you can watch the Strictly Come Dancing Final 2016 abroad live online on BBC iPlayer from anywhere in the world using a service called a VPN and in this guide I’m going to show you exactly how to achieve that.

How to watch Strictly Come Dancing Final 2016 abroad

If you try to access the BBC iPlayer website to watch Strictly Come Dancing Final and you’re outside the UK then you’ll be blocked from viewing and rather than be able to watch Strictly you’ll be blocked with a message similar to the one below.

BBC iPlayer Blocked July 2016

The reason you’re blocked is because the BBC iPlayer website knows your location and it knows this because of your IP Address.

An IP Address is a unique set of numbers that is assigned to your internet connection so websites know where to send data and who requested what. Unfortunately an IP Address can also give away your location which is how the BBC iPlayer website blocks you from viewing the Strictly final.

It’s possible to alter your IP Address to one from another country with the help of a service called a Virtual Private Network (VPN).

A VPN is a small piece of software for your computer or an app for your tablet or phone that will allow you to alter your IP Address to one from the UK and then you can access BBC iPlayer and watch the Strictly Come Dancing 2016 final from anywhere in the world.

Where can I get a VPN for Strictly

VPN services are available from many different companies. Their main purpose is to protect your privacy online so no one can snoop on what you’re doing.

One of the features is they allow you to disguise your location by changing your IP Address.

To watch the Strictly Come Dancing final 2016 you need a VPN service that is fast enough to stream video to your location.

I’ve tested a selection of providers and found IPVanish to be the best, they offer the fastest speeds and their price is competitive, they cost around £4-£5 per month if taking an annual package.

If you want to shop around then the following three services are my top choices, all you need to do is click on one of their names and sign-up to their service.

  1. IPVanish
  2. ExpressVPN
  3. StrongVPN

Once you’ve signed up read below to find out how to use the VPN to watch the Strictly final abroad.

How to use the VPN

The VPN service is available for your PC or Mac computer and your Android or iOS tablet.

You will firstly need to either download the software for your computer from the VPN service website or the app from either the Google Play store or the Apple store.

Once downloaded and installed after logging in you simply need to select the United Kingdom option also known as a “server”. Next press Connect.

Once it has connected you can now visit the BBC iPlayer website and watch the Strictly Come Dancing final 2016 abroad live online.

If you miss the live show you can simply watch on catch-up.

Below is a step-by-step guide using my recommended service IPVanish on a Windows PC. You can use this as a guide for the other providers too as it’s very similar.

IPVanish:

Visit the IPVanish website and press Start Now.

Follow the sign-up process.

Download the Windows software from the Apps area.
