How to watch Hulu outside the US

Hulu Blocked

Hulu is a “service offering ad-supported on-demand streaming video“, movies and more from the United States. Unfortunately for the rest of the world Hulu is only available to those located in the US and “its overseas territories”… so if you want to watch Hulu in the UK, Europe, Australia or perhaps you’re a US citizen in the armed forces or on vacation, the question for many is, How can you watch Hulu outside of the US?

The US produces some great series and television that is sometimes broadcast around the world at a later date, but only if you’re lucky enough to have networks in your own country who buy the rights to the show. There are plenty of shows that don’t get picked up in your own country and for some people, depending on where you live, you might not get American TV at all.

Shows like The Simpsons, 24, ER, X Files, Prison Break and more have all had worldwide success over the years, but apart from the huge shows that are well known worldwide there is a wealth of TV available that just doesn’t make it outside of the US for one reason or another.

Its likely you’ll have already visited www.hulu.com and been presented with the following screen.

Fear not, this isn’t the end of the road to watching Hulu outside the US.

So, the solution? A VPN! A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a legitimate way originally used by businesses of routing your internet connection through an encrypted third party connection. These connections can be sent anywhere in the world but for Hulu you will need to send it to a US connection. So for this purpose look for a VPN provider that offers a US connection or “server”. You’re probably thinking this sounds complicated but let me assure you, it is extremely easy, so easy in fact we’ve made a video at the bottom of this article showing you just how simple this is.

A decent VPN service can cost as little as US$5 per month and one we recommend is a provider called IPVanish who even their cheapest package will be suitable for this purpose. We positively reviewed them in the past which is why we’re happy to personally recommend them, they also offer a 7 day moneu back guarantee so you can test it for yourself. There are plenty of other good providers and some others that we recommend are PrivateInternetAccess, HideMyAss & VyprVPN. These come recommended by us as they all offer simple software which requires no technical expertise to operate. Don’t worry though if you feel like comparing many different providers most listed on our VPN Comparison Guide will be suitable as long as they offer a US server.

Once you’ve signed up to a VPN provider, connect to one of their US servers, then head over to www.Hulu.com and play any video available. You will now be presented with a screen similar to the following.

You may be searching for a free solution or have heard it is possible. We don’t recommend these for many reasons, firstly it isn’t secure, free services usually come with a catch, they may serve extra adverts, come bundled with other nasty things like viruses or Trojans and in general may even install extras that slow down your computer, these kinds of services have to make money somehow and if you’re not paying for it directly then you can be sure you’ll pay for it elsewhere. Another consideration is everyone wants something for free and if 10,000 people are all trying to access Hulu through the same free service then you can guarantee you’ll see stuttering, pauses and videos that just drop completely. Remember, very few things in life come free.

So there we have it, nothing more than a simple VPN service is required to watch Hulu outside the US. The best thing of all is a dedicated VPN service can also be used for BBC iPlayer and many other reasons so you’re not just limited to accessing Hulu with that same VPN service, it can offer a multitude of services.

Yeah, most of the bigger providers got blocked. Are you looking for a new one? I can run various tests on the smaller providers to find you one that works with Hulu.
