How to watch Amazon Prime abroad

Today I’m going to show you how to watch Amazon Prime abroad. The theory of this article works for Amazon Prime from any country, but I’m going to concentrate on Amazon Prime accounts from the United Kingdom. However, you can apply the exact same method no matter where you are in the world and if you get stuck then feel free to post in our comments section at the bottom.

If you haven’t heard of Amazon Prime before it is an online movie streaming service with more than 15,000 titles available. You also get other Amazon specific perks such as one day delivery on most items plus an unlimited secure online photo storage locker. However, most of you will be interested in the film section of the service and how to watch Amazon Prime abroad so read on.

Why can’t I watch Amazon Prime abroad?

Every internet connection has what is known as an IP Address and from this IP Address Amazon Prime can determine what country you’re currently in.

When you view from home it knows you’re in the UK and so lets you stream films but as soon as you leave the UK it also knows and rather than stream you video it blocks you and lets you know you can’t watch the content from your current location.

The solution is to get an IP Address from the UK to give the impression you’re in the UK.

How to watch Amazon Prime abroad

The solution to obtaining a UK IP Address is a small tool called a VPN or Virtual Private Network to give it its full name. VPN services are provided by many different companies and there are thousands to choose from. Our VPN Comparison Guide compares around 20 different providers, but the plethora of choice can be confusing especially if you’ve never heard of a VPN before.

Over the years we’ve learnt to spot a good provider especially for streaming content for such purposes like watching Amazon Prime abroad so we’ve whittled it down to three providers who we feel are best suited for the job.

Most providers cost about US$6-10 (Approx £4-£7) per month and can be even cheaper if you take a longer service length.

1. IPVanish

  • Our number one recommended provider. Extremely cheap when taking a yearly package.
  • Our recent review found them to be extremely reliable and fast.
  • This makes them the ideal choice for watching Amazon Prime abroad.

2. ExpressVPN

  • Easy to use and plenty of payment options.
  • Super easy Windows software.
  • Local payment options available.

3. VyprVPN

  • Free 3-day trial available
  • Good range of software for most devices
  • Backed by a large organisation

What do I do next?

Firstly you need to sign up to one of the providers listed above.

Once you’ve signed up you’ll be provided links to download software for your computer or laptop or apps for your mobile or tablet device.

Download your required choice and install it.

Once installed connect to a UK server. If you’re using IPVanish you can simply click their “UK Media or Gaming” option.

Once connected just visit the Amazon Prime website or app as you would normally and view as if you were in the UK.

The software or app takes care of all the connection and it also encrypts your connection so there is no security risk in using a VPN. There is also no further cost involved, you won’t be charged any long distance charges like the old days of telephones because the connection is all handled over the internet.

Can I do something else with the VPN service?

Now you know how to watch Amazon Prime abroad you’re probably wondering if the VPN service can be put to more than one use.

With one VPN service you can also access other UK content such as BBC iPlayer, Sky Go, and BT Sport etc. You’re not only limited to UK content either if you search around the internet there are a mass of streaming sites in other countries.

A couple of good ones are CBS and Hulu in the US. The process is exactly the same as for watching Amazon Prime abroad although you need to connect to a server in the country of the streaming service. In the case of CBS and Hulu, these are US services so connect to a US server and then visit their respective sites to stream some great content from the US.

Now you know how to watch Amazon Prime abroad why not share it with your friends?

I am based in the UK and have just subscribed to IPVanish (IPV) and installed the app on my Amazon Fire TV 4K (version 2). The installation was nice and simple and I have configured the settings for Country: UK – City: Best available – Server: Best available.

Once I have enabled a VPN connection I get partial service but there are problems. I can browse Amazon Prime UK movies, TV etc, but when I try to play anything I get an error code: INVALID_GEO_IP. Also Netflix loads, gives great connection speeds and all servers connect, it will play a trailer at the beginning of a movie or TV show but as soon as the movie or show should start I get an error saying I am using a proxy or blocker, and nothing plays.

BBC iPlayer, ITV, Ch4 and My5 also do not work.

I have tried playing with the settings to select specific cities in the UK to see if it would work but experienced the same issues.

I mainly wanted a VPN to work with Amazon Prime and the terrestrial channels when I am outside the UK and was under the impression that this was exactly what IPV was meant to do.

Since it appears that Amazon are blocking IPV, I have contacted IPVanish support to ask if there any workarounds or do I need to seek an alternative solution?

      Hi Joe,

You seem to have a big list of issues so you’re right to contact IPVanish support as they’ll be best suited to help you.

As it appears you can’t get anything to work I would guess that something is not working correctly. At the very least some services should work and others not.

Netflix unfortunately won’t work as they block almost all VPN providers. The other services should however work.

We’re going to try on our Fire TV and let you know. We’ll get back to you.
