The world of VPNs can be a confusing place but these days protecting your privacy has never been easier. In this article we look at how you can setup a VPN on Windows.
If you’re new to VPN usage then you’re probably concerned that setting one up is difficult or even outside the realms of your skills but it need not be that way.
Most VPN providers these days offer simple to use software for Windows that takes out all of the hassle of editing configuration files and fiddling about with complicated settings.
Below we take a look at the easiest way to setup a VPN on Windows from Windows 10 all the way back to some of the older operating systems including Windows 7 and 8.
Before you start
Before you start to setup a VPN on Windows you’ll need to get yourself a VPN service.
We compare 20 of the best in our VPN Comparison Guide but if you want to narrow it down to the best then the following three are our recommendations.
- IPVanish – Editor’s Choice
First, you should select any of the three above, it doesn’t really matter which one because they’re all equally good.
We’re going to run through an example using IPVanish though so you might want to start there.
Once you’ve signed up and got your account details you can get around to setting up the VPN on Windows.
How to Setup a VPN on Windows
Now you’ve got yourself a VPN account you’ll want to set it up on Windows.
In the example below we’re using IPVanish but the process is much the same with the other providers too.
On the IPVanish website you’ll see an Apps link.
Click this and you’ll be able to download the Windows software.
Once the software has downloaded you should double click it to install.
Once installation is complete you will have a new icon called IPVanish on your desktop.
Double-click this icon to launch the IPVanish software.
Enter your Login and Password details.
You should now see a screen similar to the following:
The entire IPVanish software is already set-up to use the best possible connection standards.
As a basic user all you need to do is select the country you want to connect to in the bottom right-hand corner and press Connect.
Once connected you can minimise the software and leave it running in the background, you don’t need to do anything more.
Which country should you choose?
If you want to protect your privacy then you should select your own country as this will give you the best speeds while protecting your privacy.
If you’re concerned about your government snooping on your connection somehow then you can choose a country that isn’t your own. You should try and choose a country nearby though as this will give you the best speeds.
For example, if you’re in the UK you could choose Switzerland or Iceland. If you’re in the US you could choose Canada or even Panama. Australians can choose New Zealand etc.
If you have a specific need, for example, if you wanted to watch American Netflix but you’re in the UK then you would need to select a United States server.
There are additional settings on the IPVanish software that will allow you to set items such as starting the software when Windows starts or connecting automatically.
This means you can set it up to connect automatically in future without any input from yourself.
Congratulations you’ve now setup a VPN on Windows.
