How to protect your Porn viewing from the Digital Economy Act

Digital Economy Bill porn

Porn, it’s the biggest industry on the internet but the privacy of porn viewing habits is something all users value.

The UK is now set to eradicate user’s porn viewing privacy after passing a bill now known as the DEAct (previously DEBill).

The law will require all porn sites to verify the age of their viewers via some pretty privacy invasive methods.

The law formally known as the Digital Economy Bill 2016-17 and now known as the Digital Economy Act 2017 has just received Royal Assent which is the last step in UK legislature to making the bill finally a law.

Implications

Websites that offer porn will now be required to verify the age of viewers and it isn’t just limited to UK porn sites, but global sites across the world that offer adult content.

UK users will be required to verify their age using a reliable age verified source such as entering payment details from a credit card or other personal identification methods.

This isn’t even for paid-for porn, this is for the free stuff too.

Protect your Porn viewing privacy

The privacy implications of this are obvious but if you’re interested in avoiding proving your age and giving up your privacy in the process then it’s actually really simple.

All you’re going to need is a service called a VPN. A VPN lets you disguise what you’re doing on the internet and send your data via another country.

It’s likely that websites will use IP Address information to check your location.

A VPN allows you to alter your IP Address to one from another country, the result being porn websites will assume you’re based outside the UK and the Digital Economy Act requirements and will allow you to view porn without the need to verify your age.

How to protect yourself from the Digital Economy Act:

  1. Visit the IPVanish VPN provider and sign-up.
  2. Download the software from their website or app from your app store.
  3. Install it, run it and log in when required.
  4. Select a country outside the UK but nearby such as the Netherlands.
  5. Press Connect.

The software or app will start connection for you which should take around 10-20 seconds.

Once connected everything you do on the internet will be sent via another country such as the Netherlands in the example above.

When you visit porn websites you’ll no longer be required to verify your age because you’re outside the remit of UK legislation and so the porn website won’t be required to verify your age.

Alternative VPN services

There are plenty of other VPN services out there too.

If you don’t have time to shop around then IPVanish is definitely our recommended choice and received our highest VPN review score in both 2016 and 2017.

A good VPN service should cost you anywhere between £4 and £7 per month depending on how long you sign up for.

The Digital Economy Act is here to stay so it’s worth considering getting a full 12-month package, not only will this protect your online browsing habits but it’ll also be the most cost effective package.

If you do have time to shop around then three more VPN services we recommend are:

  1. Overplay
  2. ExpressVPN
  3. StrongVPN

If you want even more choice then take a look at our VPN Comparison Guide that compares and contrasts over 20 different leading VPN providers.

If you’re still a little unsure how difficult it is to use a VPN then take a look at our example video below using a Windows computer… oh and it’s even easier on a mobile or tablet!
