How to get American Netflix in the UK on a Firestick

Netflix on TV

In this guide I'm going to show you how easy it is to get American Netflix on your Firestick or Fire TV in the UK.

Netflix is great and if you're a UK subscriber then you'll appreciate the masses of movies and TV Shows that it provides.

Hook Netflix up with the Firestick or Fire TV and you've got some serious entertainment power from the comfort of your TV.

The problem is, American Netflix has so much more content than UK Netflix and Americans pay roughly the same or less for their service which really isn't fair.

Never fear though, below I'm going to show you how you can easily access the American Netflix service in the UK on your Firestick or Fire TV and enjoy more movies and shows for no extra subscription cost.

How to get American Netflix

To get American Netflix in the UK on your Firestick or Fire TV you'll need to sign up for a service called a VPN. A VPN is an app you download on your Firestick or Fire TV which allows you to change your location so Netflix thinks you're in another country.

A VPN service will set you back a couple of pounds a month and it's cheaper if you sign up for a year so if you're a movie or TV show fiend then it's well worth considering the longer period.

Not all VPN services work with American Netflix and even fewer the Firestick and Fire TV but one I've tested and recommend is ExpressVPN. You can also check out IPVanish and StrongVPN which work with the Firestick and Fire TV but they're a bit more hit and miss with American Netflix.

Follow the steps below to watch American Netflix in the UK on your Firestick or Fire TV.

How to get American Netflix in the UK on a Firestick:

  1. Visit ExpressVPN and sign up for their service.
  2. On your Firestick or Fire TV search for ‘ExpressVPN' and install the app.
  3. Open the app and login with the email and password details you used to sign up with.
  4. Press Selected Location then move across to All (1). Click on Americas and then hold the button on United States (2).
  5. Move down to United States – Washington DC (3) and click. You may need to press the Connect button if it doesn't automatically connect.
  6. Once the app has connected press the Home button and then open Netflix.

ExpressVPN Firestick

You'll now be able to get the American Netflix movies and TV shows. Try searching for things like ‘Coco', ‘Wild China' or '10 questions for the Dalai Lama'. At the time of writing they're not available on the UK Netflix site but are on the US Netflix site.

When you've finished watching head back to the Home or Apps section on your Firestick or Fire TV and open ExpressVPN. Click on the large power button which will disconnect you.

You'll now have access to your regular UK Netflix catalogue. You can reconnect at any time or as many times as you want to watch US Netflix again.

There are two main issues you may run into. You connect and you get an error saying you're using a ‘Proxy' or ‘Unblocker' and you connect and your Netflix catalogue remains the UK one.

Below I'll show you how to fix both issues.

You're using a Proxy or Unblocker

If you try to play a movie or show and it tells you that you're using a Proxy or Unblocker then you'll need to head back to the ExpressVPN app.

Disconnect and then go to the Choose Location section again. Move to All and then down to Americas. Hold the button on United States until you see the city selection list. You should now select a different city.

For example, United States – Washington DC works well for me but you may need to select a different city such as New York, Dallas, Los Angeles etc.

Once reconnected open the Netflix website and attempt to play a movie or TV show. You may need to change cities a couple of times if it still doesn't work.

You still see the UK Netflix catalogue

Some content is available on both Netflix sites so you should ensure you're searching for something only available on the American Netflix site to confirm you're seeing the UK site still.

If you're certain then you need to ‘reboot' Netflix to make it open at the intro screen again, this is where you see animated red Netflix logo and then the account selection page.

There are a few ways you can force this. Firstly hold the Home button on your Firestick or Fire TV remote and put the device to Sleep for a minute or two.

Start the Firestick or Fire TV again by pressing the remote and then run one or two other apps first, for example, Silk Browser or BBC iPlayer.

Come out of these and go back to Netflix. It should then start with the animated Netflix logo and ask you to sign into your family member account. You'll then have access to the American Netflix site.

American Netflix vs UK Netflix

American Netflix has much more content than our UK Netflix site. In fact, according to the website Finder, US Netflix gets access to a massive 12.1% more movies which equates to over 430 extra movies.

It doesn't just stop at movies either as they also get more TV shows with 10% more which is something in the region of 150 more series.

While numbers have evened out a little in recent years, that's not even the full picture. Not only does American Netflix get more content but they also get different content and what could arguably be called ‘better' content.

US Netflix Wild China

You don't get Wild China on UK Netflix.

For example at the time of writing Disney Pixar's Coco movie is only available on the American (and Canadian) Netflix website. In the UK it's not available and is looking like it'll be released on Amazon Prime so may never be available on UK Netflix.

A Quick Recap

Getting American Netflix in the UK on your Amazon Firestick or Fire TV is much easier than you might imagine.

All you need to do this is to get an app called a VPN. Not all VPN services are suitable. My recommended choice is ExpressVPN because they work well, you can get it by clicking the button below.

Once you've signed up, install their app on your Firestick or Fire TV, connect to the United States and then open Netflix and enjoy watching American Netflix.
