The problem with speed is it is impossible to know what speeds you’ll achieve from the VPN service you’re looking at and it is often the case that it isn’t until after you’ve signed up and parted with your cash that you really find out if you’ve made a good purchasing decision or not.
There are many factors in what speeds you’ll achieve from your VPN provider and one of the biggest is the physical distance from your location. There are other factors but one you can rely on to be a factor is distance, if you’re in the UK and the server you’re using is in Australia then speed achievable is going to be relatively low and so having expectations as such will reduce any disappointment.
When it comes to using a VPN in your own country there should be very little loss caused by distance, especially if you live in a smallish country like the UK as oppose to the United States or Russia for example.
To aid you finding the fastest UK VPN server we carry out monthly speed tests from some of the most well known VPN providers and below are our September 2015 speed results.
UK VPN September 2015 Speed Results
Local connection speed at the time of the test : 162.71 Mbps
| Rank|| Provider|| Speed|| Lowest Price|| Link|
Testing was carried out on Monday, 7th September 2015 between 12:00-13:00.
To test the maximum speed a test file was downloaded from a set location using a download manager to open concurrent connections.
Tests were carried out in the UK with all VPN providers utilising OpenVPN 256 bit. The exception being ExpressVPN who offer 128 bit only.
Ironsocket was tested by using OpenVPN directly while all the other providers were tested via their custom Windows software on a Windows 10 system.
Overall there is very little movement compared with August. The same four VPN providers continue to offer similar top speeds with very little difference. Only some minor numbers settle the top four positions and IVPN, LiquidVPN, IPVanish, and VPN.ac continue to dominate and prove they offer the best UK VPN server speeds.
PrivateInternetAccess being one of the cheapest VPN providers when taking a 12 month package continue to impress as they again retain 5th spot.
Another budget provider EarthVPN although considerably slower than their result last month show that if cost is a concern you can still achieve reasonable speeds and while not as fast as the other 5 providers they do offer good speeds at a low price point.
Again the speed from VyprVPN is less than pleasing although still fast enough for many internet connections worldwide. One thing to note is the speed issue with VyprVPN is specific to my ISP and the route taken to their server. I continue to liaise with VyprVPN as they work towards resolving the issue. Customers of ISPs other than Virgin Media in the UK shouldn’t suffer such low speeds with VyprVPN.
I’ll be back in October to see how things have changed.
