Today I’m looking at the Best VPN for Streaming and in this article I’m going to compare 5 of the leading VPN providers to find out how they stack up when streaming video and other media.
Not all VPN providers are made equal and while they all cost roughly the same amount of money there are huge differences between speeds and the services they offer. While one can be slow, cause buffering and stuttering another can be fast and be a dream to stream with.
Unfortunately you don’t know the difference between services until you’ve signed up so I’ve been putting them to the test to help you make a choice on which is going to give you the best streaming experience and make sure you’re not out of pocket after investing in a poor service.

IPVanish is simply the best VPN for Streaming. Streaming requires top speeds especially if you like your quality in 1080p or 4k. In our monthly speed tests IPVanish has regularly come out top out of over 10 different VPN providers offering the fastest speeds.
Their top tier network allows them to offer some of the fastest speeds in the industry and it appears heavy investment has lead to a harmonious network. Often VPN providers overload their networks which leads to slow speeds and ultimately buffering and stuttering but with the speeds achievable on IPVanish you won’t suffer such a fate.
Software and apps are available for Windows, Mac, Android and iOS meaning you can connect within just a few simple clicks and forget the VPN is even running enjoying whatever streaming system you wish.
With over 60 countries in all the major entertainment locations you’re also able to stream content from abroad. This could be from networks that don’t exist in your country to accessing wider movie catalogue ranges. With all major locations covered you won’t struggle to find entertainment.
IPVanish is a fully no-log VPN provider who doesn’t discriminate against protocols, ports or other factors. So if you like to stream from torrents, newsgroups or other areas then the privacy of what you watch is guaranteed.
Best VPN for Streaming
If you’re after a smaller VPN provider then VPN.ac definitely fits the bill for streaming.
Although they don’t have as many server choices only 20 as opposed to IPVanish’s 60, they are also one of the fastest VPN providers I’ve tested.
For streaming this is great news because you won’t suffer any buffering or stuttering. Just as with IPVanish, VPN.ac regularly feature either top or within the top 3 of our monthly speed tests making them one of the best choices for streaming.
I especially like the prices of the VPN.ac service. While a month will cost about the standard price of $9 (approx £6.36) when taking a yearly package the savings are huge and it works out at just $4.83 (approx £3.41) a month which makes them one of the cheapest in the industry.
VPN.ac also don’t discriminate against network traffic and store very minimal logs for tiny fractions of time. This means you’re free to stream from any source without the worry that your privacy will be invaded.
Software is available for Windows and Mac with an app for Android. If you’re an iPhone or iPad user and require an iOS app then you’re out of luck and it’s one of the only negatives of the service. Unless you’re prepared to manually set-up then you’ll need to look elsewhere.
LiquidVPN rounds up the top 3 fastest VPN providers in my selection today and for streaming due to the speeds they offer they make an excellent choice.
They are the smallest provider listed in terms of locations so although they offer lightening fast speeds they won’t be suitable for everyone’s needs. With servers in just 9 countries with most concentrated in Europe and North America, you’ll need to be nearby to take advantage of their streaming speeds.
Windows, Mac, and Android are covered but again like VPN.ac there is no iOS app so if you’re a newcomer and don’t fancy manual set-up then you’ll need to stick with IPVanish.
Although slightly lesser on server locations the service does have the benefit of being one of the cheapest at just $4.75 per month (approx £3.35) when taking an annual service so if the server locations are suitable you could bag yourself a bargain price.
LiquidVPN employs a smart DNS system regardless of what server you’re connected to so you can access some of the more well-known US and UK streaming services such as Hulu and BBC iPlayer. This definitely helps with speed and reduces the likelihood you’ll suffer from buffering.
Overplay offer a bit of a unique solution out of the five listed providers. While they do offer a VPN service they also offer a SmartDNS + VPN service that offers an interesting twist for those interested in streaming.
With the SmartDNS + VPN package you not only have the encryption and privacy capabilities of the VPN service but you also get access to their SmartDNS service. The SmartDNS system allows you to stream content from around the world with minimal to no speed loss. Rather than routing your connection via another country with the VPN system you use your own connection but the magic is handled behind the scenes by Overplay themselves.
The service is slightly more expensive than the other choices coming in at $8.32 a month (approx £5.88) but if you’re interesting in using the SmartDNS service as well as having the protection of a VPN then they could very well be ideal.
Unfortunately, Overplay only offers desktop software for Windows and Mac systems and so if you want to stream to your tablet or mobile device and don’t want the hassle of manual set-up then you’ll need to look to one of the earlier providers such as IPVanish.
Overplay have 48 servers worldwide but they’re a little pricey and they don’t have any apps. However, if you fancy the SmartDNS system then they could be worth a look for your streaming needs.
ExpressVPN round up the selection for streaming VPN options and they’re not half bad either.
With 78 countries to choose from they’re the best choice for streaming in a lot of countries that aren’t supported by the other providers. Having a local server for streaming reasons will give you the best possible speeds.
What I like most about ExpressVPN is they offer a 30-day money back guarantee. This is pretty much unheard of in the VPN industry and allows you to test the service for nearly a whole month to decide if it’s good enough for your streaming and other needs. If you don’t like the service then simply cancel and get your money back.
ExpressVPN do offer the full range of software and apps so whether you’ve got a Windows, Mac, Android or iOS device or computer then you’ll be able to make connection easily.
The price for ExpressVPN is a little expensive though and will set you back $8.32 per month (approx £5.88) when taking an annual package and even more on a month by month basis. With cheaper options available above you may want to consider this.
ExpressVPN make a good choice for streaming but with faster and cheaper alternatives you may want to consider one of the other options first and if they aren’t suitable then grab a subscription from ExpressVPN.
Summary: Best VPN for Streaming
All the VPN providers above are suitable for streaming but my top pick is IPVanish. They’re suitable for most users, with a good server selection, fast speeds and one of the cheaper prices so it makes sense to sign-up to them for streaming. With no logs you can be safe in the knowledge your streaming habits remain private.
The other 4 choices also make good options but with a few minor niggles they may not be suitable in every case so make sure you visit their website to ensure that what they offer suits your personal needs.
