Best VPN for Kodi 2016

Check out our updated Best VPN for Kodi 2017 guide.

Best VPN for Kodi

Kodi or XBMC as it was formally known became huge in 2015 and leading into 2016 it shows no sign of slowing down.

Apple, Amazon Fire, Android, Raspberry Pi and other devices are selling out across the world as everyone jumps on the Kodi bandwagon. If you don’t already own a Kodi enabled device then you’re missing out as the wealth of content from movies to programmes, sport and more is unbelievable making devices that support Kodi most sort after.

Getting a VPN for Kodi is a great idea for the following few reasons.

If you’ve tried to access certain services on a Kodi device then you’ll know that they’re region restricted, a VPN can bypass these restrictions.

When you access any service on Kodi your publicly available IP Address is broadcast meaning any services that you access know when and who accessed removing your privacy, a VPN avoids this and disguises your IP Address.

Lastly, some streaming services might be blocked in your country but available in others and a VPN will allow you to access them.

Below I’m taking a look at the best VPN for Kodi and also doing a round-up of two other VPN services that will be ideal for use with Kodi.

VPN access isn’t easily available on all Kodi enabled devices so if you’re looking for set-up help or instructions check the bottom of this guide as I’ve included some links for set-up guides for the most popular Kodi devices.

1. IPVanish

IPVanish Small Logo

Pros

  •  Super Fast.
  •  No bandwidth restrictions.
  •  Complete no-log provider.

 Cons

  •  Not that I can think of.

If you’re looking for the Best VPN for Kodi then IPVanish certainly is the solution.

While IPVanish doesn’t “officially” support Kodi systems like nearly every other VPN provider out there, they are one of the few who have put together an unofficial guide to using Kodi with their service, you can see the link to this at the bottom of this article.

So why is IPVanish the Best VPN for Kodi?

Firstly and most importantly IPVanish is the fastest VPN provider and when streaming video on Kodi, this is extremely important. If you use a slow VPN provider then video playback will be slow, jittery and filled with buffering ruining your viewing enjoyment.

Secondly, IPVanish has one of the widest range of servers in comparison to many other VPN providers. IPVanish cover 60 different countries which means you have a huge choice of locations to connect to. In essence, this allows you to access region restricted content from around the world.

If you’re concerned about price then their monthly package costs just US$10 (approx £6.77) per month but if you choose to pay yearly then this is reduced massively down to just US$6.49 (approx £4.39) per month so their prices won’t break the bank either.

If you’re interested in trying IPVanish then take advantage of their 7-day money back guarantee and click the link below.

2. ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN Small Logo

 Pros

  •  Huge amount of countries.
  •  No-log VPN service.

 Cons

  •  Not as fast as IPVanish.
  •  More expensive.

If IPVanish doesn’t fit the bill for what you’re after then taking a look at ExpressVPN would make a good second choice VPN service for Kodi.

Like IPVanish they have a huge list of countries to connect to and are in fact slightly larger than IPVanish on this front with servers in over 78 countries. With such a large selection of connection points around the world it allows for nearly every TV streaming service to be accessible on your Kodi and you’re unlikely to find any service blocked.

Unfortunately on the downside ExpressVPN aren’t quite as fast as IPVanish and in my monthly tests I find I achieve roughly half the speed or less of my internet connection whereas with IPVanish and highest encryption I achieve more than 80% of my full speed.

Another area that distracts a little from the ExpressVPN is the price. Unlike IPVanish their monthly price comes in at US$12.95 (approx £8.77) which does reduce down to US$8.32 (approx £5.63) per month when taking an annual package. Although even with the annual saving they are still one of the more expensive VPN providers.

A trade-off for the price is the large 30-day money back guarantee which will be more than enough time for you to get the service up and running with your Kodi and see how it performs. If it isn’t what you were expecting or you struggle to set up then just take advantage of their near month long money back guarantee.

3. PrivateInternetAccess

PrivateInternetAccess Small Logo

 Pros

  •  Well recommended for Kodi.
  •  Cheap prices.

 Cons

  •  Not as many servers.
  •  Not the fastest.

PrivateInternetAccess or PIA as it is otherwise known is well recommended in the Kodi world. When searching for VPN solutions for Kodi then PIA is one of the most recommended providers.

No doubt the cheap prices attract people to make use of the service and at just US$3.33 (approx £2.25) per month when taking a yearly package you can see why.

Although PIA is considerably cheaper than both IPVanish and ExpressVPN they do offer a smaller service in terms of countries available to connect to. Sitting at just 24 different locations it is over 50% less in size than both earlier providers. A cheap price is a trade-off for less location choice.

So while you won’t be able to access as many different services on your Kodi there is a good range of the major countries and for such a cheap price it’s hard to fault.

PrivateInternetAccess aren’t the fastest provider by far and if speed is a concern then I would recommend choosing IPVanish, however, they aren’t too slow and won’t cause any issues with playback or buffering.

If you want to know more check out recent PIA review or click the link below to visit their site.

Summary: IPVanish for Kodi VPN

All three listed providers make good choices and while their services don’t differ massively they do slightly differ on price, speed and countries available.

Through regular testing I recommend using IPVanish for your Kodi because of the balance of server locations and speed in comparison with the price they charge. While PIA is the cheapest they do offer a smaller service so weigh up what is more important to yourself.
