Finding a good and reliable VPN service can be difficult in itself but when throwing the fact you need one for your Chromebook into the mix then it becomes an even harder tasks.

Many VPN service just don’t support the Chromebook so while you may be able to set it up yourself if you’re some kind of tech wizard the likelihood is you’ll be left confused and in the end wasting your money.

The following 5 providers below all support the Chromebook and I’ve put them in order of my recommendations.

So let’s take a look at which VPN is best for the Chromebook.

1. IPVanish

IPVanish Small Logo

When it comes to Chromebook support, IPVanish is my number 1 VPN provider.

Unlike some other VPN providers there is a dedicated area in their set-up guide section that has both a tutorial and visual guide for setting up the VPN service with your Chromebook.

This makes is extremely easy to set up showing you exactly what to type and where and will allow you to be set up within just a few minutes.

IPVanish allows you to use the L2TP/IPSec VPN protocol which features 128-bit encryption to keep your browsing activity safe and secure.

With VPN servers in over 60 different countries you can hide your online location and browse privately. It will also allow you to access region-restricted content from anywhere in the world allowing you to stream services such as BBC iPlayer from any country.

IPVanish is also one of the fastest VPN services I’ve tested meaning you won’t suffer any noticeable slowdown or buffering if watching video.

IPVanish costs $6.49 (approximately £5.19) per month when taking an annual package which makes them competitively priced in comparison to the competition.

2. ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN is my number two choice for use with the Chromebook.

Just like IPVanish they offer a comprehensive set-up guide with a visual step-by-step making set-up quick and painless regardless of your technical skills.

L2TP/IPsec is the preferred method of encryption offered by ExpressVPN and most suitable for the Chromebook allowing you to browse securely.

ExpressVPN is a bit more expensive at $8.32 per month (approximately £6.66) which is one of the negative sides of the service and you may want to consider why you should pay more when an equal or better service is available more cheaply from IPVanish.

One benefit ExpressVPN does have is the number of countries available to connect to. There are currently 87 different countries available with more than 136 locations making them one of the biggest VPN providers available. If you need access to this bigger range of countries then it will likely offset the higher price tag.

ExpressVPN has a 30-day money back guarantee which will allow you to test the service on your Chromebook and if you’re unhappy then it’s simply a case of requesting a refund.

3. StrongVPN

StrongVPN is another provider that offer set-up guides for the Chromebook making it a simple affair to get connected and protected.

Currently there are VPN servers in 22 different countries which make them smaller than the other two options and means you’ll need to consider if their server locations are suitable.

Servers are available in North America and Europe with a handful across Asia. If you’re in Australia or South America then there are no local servers so you should probably consider one of the earlier providers.

StrongVPN is the cheapest provider at just $5.83 per month (approximately £4.66) so if the server locations are suitable for your needs then you can bag a bargain price.

I found StrongVPN to be a little slower than the above two providers but it didn’t cause me any issues when browsing or streaming video but if you want top speeds then my recommendation is to pay a dollar or two more per month and opt for IPVanish.

4. Overplay

Overplay Small Logo

Overplay Website Nov 16

Overplay is a little different to the above providers as it doesn’t have a specific set-up guide for using the service on a Chromebook.

However, Overplay does support the L2TP protocol which is the standard used on the Chromebook and offered by the other providers. In a nutshell this means you can pretty much use their L2TP settings and set-up manually.

If you’re a new user and need a visual step-by-step guide then this may not be for you but if you’re OK with entering a few settings then it shouldn’t be too hard to get up and running.

Overplay costs $8.33 per month (approximately £6.67) which makes them a little expensive compared to the competition and they do have fewer servers locations available than some other providers.

While that’s an obvious negative of the service they are however one of the fastest providers I’ve tested. In my recent review I found them to be extremely fast and in the top few providers in terms of speeds.

If you can overlook the obvious lack of set-up guide and the price then you can get yourself a fast VPN service for use with your Chromebook. Click the link below to visit their website.

5. VyprVPN

VyprVPN rounds up my selection of VPN providers for use with Chromebook.

Like the first three providers VyprVPN have support for the Chromebook in the form of a set-up guide. Just “7 simple steps” is all it takes to be up and running with the VyprVPN service on your Chromebook.

VyprVPN has over 70 different countries available to connect to giving you plenty of choices and they also offer a 3-day free trial allowing you to test the service. All you need to do is enter your payment details, if you’re unhappy with the service then you can simply cancel before the 3 days elapse and you won’t be charged, happy to keep the service? then you need to do nothing.

VyprVPN weren’t the fastest provider in my tests but I did get about 50% of my internet speed to their local servers which was more than enough to browse the web, stream video and carry out other tasks without any noticeable slowdown.
