In this article I’m going to take a look at the Best VPN for Asia.
Asia is a place of mystery for many and one place that many of us are now visiting on a more regular basis. If you live there then you already know the charms of the continent.
As air fares have lowered over the years and many of us want to explore more exotic locations with unspoilt beauty and often a cheaper way of living the amount of people travelling to Asia has grown exponentially.
Internet security is important for both the traveller and the long term resident of Asia and a VPN is now an essential tool.
Not only is a VPN essential for use in Asia due to public wi-fi safety concerns that should be considered anywhere in the world but the differences in the freedom of internet access in the different countries that make up Asia can be stark.
China for example has a very repressive internet regime that blocks access to most major social media websites that those of us in the west take for granted. News outlets are often blocked too and a whole range of other sites. Users in Thailand and Indonesia are also finding more websites blocked from access on a daily basis and it isn’t always sites that you would expect as Indonesians recently found when Tumblr and Netflix were blocked across the country.
In this guide I’m going to look at the best providers for residents of Asia and also for short and long term travellers.
So let’s take a look at the best VPN for Asia.
Best VPN for Asia

- 44 Asian servers.
- Fastest download speeds.
- No logging.
- Unlimited downloading.
- Clients for all systems.
IPVanish is without a double the ultimate choice for a VPN service for Asia.
They have 44 servers across the whole of Asia stretching from Turkey all the way to Japan.
13 different countries are covered with servers in Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, Turkey and Vietnam.
With such a wide range of Asian countries covered it means wherever you are there is a connection point close by. If you’re in China, Thailand, Indonesia or any other country that restricts access to certain websites or services you can tunnel out to a nearby country by selecting one of the 13 available and access all censored content.
For example if Netflix is blocked in Indonesia you can connect to Singapore to access Netflix or even use the IPVanish US servers to get more content.
IPVanish has software for Windows and Mac and mobile apps for Android and iOS devices meaning no matter what device you use you can protect your internet connection from unwanted snoopers and access a free and open internet within Asia.
As one of the cheapest providers with the fastest service we recommend them as the number one choice for a VPN in Asia.
- 4 locations across Asia.
- Good download speeds.
- Software for major devices.
- Fewer locations than IPVanish.
StrongVPN is my second choice VPN provider for Asia. They don’t have anywhere near as many servers in Asia as IPVanish but they are ever so slightly cheaper by around 21 pence / 70 cents per month.
Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan make up the total of the Asian located servers from StrongVPN which gives a good spread across the region. If you’re further afield in India or towards Europe then the service will be of less use although servers in Israel and Turkey should make up for this.
StrongVPN has software for Windows and Mac and apps for mobile devices using Android or iOS. This makes usage simple. You can basically click to connect to a server and then forget about it, no complicated set-up is needed.
Due to the ease of use this makes StrongVPN ideal if you’re travelling in Asia. If you live in Asia then you should consider the distance from their closest country to yourself. However if you want to unblock sites that are usually blocked then Singapore and Hong Kong will be ideal connection points.
Personally, IPVanish just has the edge but if you want to check out StrongVPN then click below.
- Lots of servers.
- 30-Day money back guarantee.
- A bit expensive.
- Not the fastest.
ExpressVPN is one of the bigger players in Asia and although they don’t quite reach the same heights as IPVanish in location numbers they do have a good 12 different countries covered.
Asian servers are located in Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.
With such a large range of locations it makes the ExpressVPN service ideal if you live in Asia but also if you’re planning on travelling anywhere on the continent. If there isn’t a server in the country you’re visiting then there is certainly one close by.
What lets ExpressVPN down is the price. Being a few dollars more expensive than most other providers really takes away the shine especially when you consider providers such as IPVanish offer more VPN servers in Asia, are faster and do so all at a cheaper price.
ExpressVPN do offer some payment options that aren’t available at most other providers so if you’re looking for local payment options like Alipay, UnionPay, WebMoney, FanaPay, iDeal and more then it might be your only way of paying for a reliable and quality VPN service.
- Yearly package cheap.
- Dedicated Chinese options.
- No iOS app.
- Less overall servers.
VPN.ac are a lesser known provider but by no means does this make them any of a lesser provider.
In fact, VPN.ac are one of the fastest providers we’ve used and along with IPVanish they sit either top or second in our monthly VPN server speed tests.
Although VPN.ac started off smaller in terms of server locations they have been expanding quickly and now offer over 20 different countries with Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore making up their Asian offerings.
Due to only having 3 servers located in Asia it makes their service less appealing for large parts of Asia although with their strategically placed servers and top speeds it means you should get a good connection regardless of your location.
VPN.ac excel at Chinese access and even have specific server modes for Chinese users who want to bypass the Great Firewall of China.
While they may not be the biggest provider they do make the best choice for Chinese users and those visiting mainland China. If you want to bypass censorship and take advantage of their extremely low prices then they’re worth checking out.
- 8 Asian countries.
- SmartDNS access.
- No mobile apps.
- More expensive.
Overplay round up our selection of best VPNs for Asia with 8 countries covered.
Overplay offer 48 servers in total with Hong Kong, India, Israel, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Turkey making up their Asian offering.
Overplay have software for both PC and Mac so if you want to use the service on your desktop systems then it’s fine. Unfortunately they don’t currently have any mobile apps so unless you’re happy to do manual set-up then it’s probably best to stick with IPVanish.
On a monthly basis they’re similarly priced but when taking a yearly package Overplay work out slightly more expensive so unless you especially want to sign up to Overplay then the other earlier options will likely be more advantageous.
With the range of servers on offer across Asia Overplay will be suitable for you if you live there or even if you’re travelling for a short or long period of time.
Their free SmartDNS system allows you to access regionally restricted entertainment content such as selecting different Netflix regions without speed loss and would be a good reason to look into their service.
Asia is a vast and interesting land and with so many different layers of censorship in place in various countries within Asia, a VPN is now a critical tool to surf the web openly and freely.
IPVanish is without a doubt the best VPN for use in Asia due to the available locations they offer, their price and the fact their speeds are often the best in comparison to the competition.
If IPVanish doesn’t suit your needs for whatever reason then the other 4 listed providers make good alternative options.
I hope the information contained within this guide has given you a good starting point for reasons each provider is suitable for Asia but if you need you can do more research at each of their individual sites.
