Best VPN for iPhone 2017: Our Top 5 Picks

iPhone open to the home screen

According to last year’s report by SimilarWeb, mobile browsing accounts for more than 50% of all consumer traffic in the US. This impressive figure is a testament to the increasing power and overall popularity of smartphones around the world.

Apple’s iOS is currently leading the market (at least in the US) in terms of both – being the most popular mobile platform, and having the largest selection of apps. While the massive App Store is certainly nice, it can also get a bit overwhelming.

Finding a solid VPN provider in a sea of mediocre apps is nearly impossible, especially if you don’t know what to look for. Luckily, we did all of the hard work for you and narrowed down your choices to just 5 of the best available VPN iPhone apps on the App Store.

How to choose the best VPN for iPhone in 2017

Thanks to Apple’s rigorous app screening process, most of the apps on the App Store should be relatively secure. That said, it’s important to understand that just because an app is “safe to download”, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the provider’s infrastructure is also sound.

For that reason, there are a lot of things to consider before picking a VPN provider on the App Store. For starters, “free” providers should immediately be avoided at all costs.

A recent study found that nearly every free VPN service for Android was riddled with security flaws. Though the study focused on Android smartphones, researchers warn that iPhones are not immune to similar vulnerabilities.

Aside from potential security issues, many VPN apps are simply too complicated to set up, have horrendous UI, or completely destroy your battery thanks to poor task management. We wanted to help you avoid these issues, so we picked 5 trustworthy providers that offer a high quality iOS app.

I’ve personally used all of these apps in the past, and can confidently say that you can’t go wrong by picking any of the following.

IPVanish Apps

1. IPVanish

Best VPN for iPhone

VPN Countries : 60 | VPN Servers : 700 | Simultaneous Connections : 5 | Price : $6.49 p/m (≈ £5.12)

Impressive speeds

7-day money back guarantee

Limited support

IPVanish is easily one of the best VPN for iPhone I’ve ever used and their service is no different. Though the UI itself isn’t anything extraordinary, the app is well put together and is very easy to use.

Those new to VPNs will do quite well with IPVanish, as it doesn’t require more than a few taps to get online. More advanced users, however, are also in luck, as there are plenty of adjustable options to get your VPN connection “just right.”

While the app packs a few useful features, what truly sets IPVanish apart is their unmatched selection of servers and unique IPs. They also don’t keep any logs of your browsing and download history, so all of your online activity remains truly private.

2. VPN.AC

Best experience

VPN Countries : 21 | VPN Servers : 35+ | Simultaneous Connections : 6 | Price : $4.80 p/m (≈ £3.86)

Really fast

Awesome widget

Limited options

VPN.AC is an iOS newcomer, and at first glance resembles an early prototype rather than an App-Store-ready release.

Fortunately, what VPN.AC lacks in design it makes up in download speed and ease of use. In my experience, it’s about as fast as IPVanish, but there’s a single feature that makes it a clear winner in my books.

Unlike IPvanish, or anyone else, really, VPN.AC has an awesome dashboard widget that allows you to quickly turn your VPN connection on or off, all without needing to open the app.

Unfortunately, adding this widget is about all of the customization that VPN.AC lets you actually do. So if you’re looking for something a bit more advanced, IPVanish might be a better choice.

I recently wrote a full review on the VPN.AC iPhone app, so if you’re still not sure whether or not it’s right for you be sure to check that out.

3. VyprVPN

Best for free trial

VPN Countries : 70 | VPN Servers : 700+ | Simultaneous Connections : 2 – 5 | Price : $6.67 p/m  (≈ £5.34)

Free trial

Awesome app

A little slower than #1 and #2

VyprVPN is one of the first VPN apps that I’ve ever used, and I also think that it’s one of the best.

For me, the experience with VyprVPN was love at first sight. Immediately after installing the application you’ll notice its beautiful design and easy to use interface.

That said, the beauty of VyprVPN goes much further than its design. For example, the iOS app allows you to use their custom VPN protocol, dubbed Chameleon. Chameleon is a derivative of OpenVPN, and allows users to defeat VPN blocking.

While VyprVPN is an easy to use, well designed application, it falls a bit short when it comes to speed.

4. Shellfire VPN

Best for VPN newbies

VPN Countries : 31 | VPN Servers : 46 | Simultaneous Connections : 1 | Price : $5.60 p/m  (≈ £4.48)

Great speeds

No logs

Single concurrent connection

The Shellfire VPN app is incredibly easy to use, making it a safe choice for any beginner. After downloading it from the App Store and installing the VPN profile to your phone, you’re pretty much ready to get back online.

Beginners can just hit the huge “connect” button, wait for the confirmation, and close the app. More advanced users, however, might want to tweak a few things first. Well, at least that’s what I wanted to do before I quickly realized that I couldn’t.

Similarly to VPN.ac, Shellfire is very limited in terms of user configurable options. And aside from keeping an eye on your connection and selecting a VPN server, there’s not much you can do. That said, I can let these limitations slide based on the incredible speeds I was able to get out of Shellfire.

If you’re on the fence about whether or not Shellfire is the right choice for you, check my more detailed review.

5. StrongVPN

Best affordable provider

VPN Countries : 23 | VPN Servers : 45 | Simultaneous Connections : 2 | Price : $5.83 p/m  (≈ £4.66)

Easy to use

Very affordable

Limited server selection

StrongVPN is a fairly good provider and their iPhone app is quite easy to use. Similarly to VyprVPN, Strong features a large “connect” button that will quickly pair you with the fastest available server.

To be perfectly honest, nothing really stands out when it comes to the app’s design or its features. Strong’s offering is in line with the rest of the providers listed here, and their speeds are comparable. That being said, StrongVPN has one advantage over the other big players – price.

StrongVPN’s second advantage is their age. The company has been around for quite some time, and the fact that they’re still going strong (heh) should say something about the quality of service. So if you’re looking for a good VPN provider, but want to spend as little as possible, I would recommend checking them out.
